We need the sun for everything; food, transportation, education, and just to live. The sun negatively affects us in our daily lives because our skin is sensitive to the sun. This means that we are prone to burn. A way to protect our skin is with sunscreen. The short-term effect of not wearing sunscreen when exposed to the sun is you can get a painful rash or peeling of skin can occur. Long-term effects of not protecting yourself from the sun can be that it changes your DNA or gives you skin cancer. It changes your DNA by radiation smashing into you skin. The reason why this is so dangerous is because the DNA will now instruct the skin to fix itself because of the radiation, but the instructions would have been changed. The first known use of sunscreen was in Ancient Greece and Egypt. They need it there because of the hot climate. The first time it was commercially produced was in 1936. The founder of sunscreen is also the founder of L'Oreal, French chemist Eugène Schueller. Another chemist, H. A. Milton Blake, brought sunscreen to Australia around the same time. Ancient Greeks used olive oil and Ancient Egyptians used extracts of rice, jasmine, and lupin plants to create sunscreen. These techniques are still used. Today sunscreen contains a mixture of organic and inorganic ingredients. The inorganic materials are enhanced with UVB. It absorbs the organic chemicals, cinnamates, octyl, methoxycinnamate , oara-aminobenzoic acid, and benzophenes. These organic chemicals convert the sun’s energy into harmless heat. Sunscreen’s purpose is to protect your skin from the sun. It is used to reflect or scatter the bright light from the sun away from your delicate skin. People apply sunscreen when there skin is not used to the sun or when the sun is very strong. The factor of sunscreen will tell you how long you can stay in the sun. If you apply a sunscreen that is 30, this means that you can stay in the sun 30 times longer before you burn. Sunscreen acts as bullet proof vest against the sun.
Every young girl or woman in America wants their image to look like a Barbie doll. This perfection includes being extremely skinny and extremely tan. In order to achieve this Barbie-like image women and men have been using tanning beds or spray tans to alter their appearance. Tanning beds can prove to be very harmful to a person’s health and can cause extremely dangerous medical conditions, including the most deadly type of cancer. However, fake tans can also be used in a positive way for some people who use them sparingly.

Over all, skin cancer is known to be a very common and dangerous cancer among the U.S.. Although there is no superior or particular cause known for it, it can be reduced by reducing radiation exposure from the sun and also tanning booths and beds. If not attempting to prevent it by staying out of the sun, and seeking not seeking shade and so forth, protection such as longer clothing garments that better cover the body as well as hats and sunglasses can help to eliminate direct exposure and reduce some of the damages that may occur. Many people are worried about what current energy resources may be doing to the environment. Oil spills and nuclear power plant mishaps have only been a few accidents that have had a big impact on the environment and the people who inhabit it. There are plenty of energy sources that do not harm the environment and are still able to get the job done. Solar energy is one energy alternative that will insure the betterment of the country and, at the same time, protect the natural environment.

I have chosen to do my essay on the largest organ of the body, skin. It has several functions vital to the survival of the body as I will discuss in the following paragraphs.
