Numerous news headlines and articles can be found today preaching the importance of mental health, and how many people it affects in the world. People tend not to consider, however, where these problems may originate from, especially not at such a young age. The amount of homework assigned to students in today's time has taken what many would agree is a dangerous increase, and the consequences are being debated across the world. Excessive workloads in today’s time should be decreased to a more manageable amount, because it adds unnecessary amounts of stress and can cause students to miss out on important life experiences. An increase in homework means much more than a student simply spending extra time hunched over their desk. A study published in the Journal of Experimental Education states that: “56% of the students in the study cited homework as a primary stressor in their lives. For example, Source A states that: “Regular accomplishments like finishing homework build self-esteem, which aids students mental and physical health. Responsibility and time management are highly desirable qualities that benefit students long after they graduate.” Although it is a valid point, the negative side effects of homework begin to outweigh these benefits when the amount becomes larger and seemingly uncontrollable.
