When someone breaks you down over time, telling you you are worthless, pathetic, stupid, ugly, retarded, fat, loser, ect; one may start to think that all this is true. Demeanor changes, the child starts to feel low, and thinks they aren 't good enough. I should know, being bullied wasn 't fun. Being ridiculed for things on a daily basis. Being called names, being hit, degraded is never easy. I started feeling down, I had major depression and anxiety issues. The American Psychological Association reports that roughly 40% to 80% of children are involved in bullying on some level during their time in school. (APA, 2014) The magnitude of the problem can be observed in the statistics. In the United States, a total of 4,080,879 children between the ages of five and 18 have been the victims of bullying compared to 3,892,199 who have reported that they have engaged in bullying someone else. Additionally, 851,755 said that they have been both the victim and the bully. A child is bullied every seven seconds, and many do not report it. Often bullying activities are not reported because the victim may feel embarrassed, afraid the bullying may become worst or doubt they will receive help. Unfortunately, children who are bullied are more likely to suffer physical and emotional problems including depression, social withdrawal and are at risk of catastrophic behaviors.
As a ten year old I was forced to mature. Not in the sense that I had to become the sole breadwinner of the family but before then I had grown up in this bubble that was all about me. At just one years old my mom was working as a clerk in a doctor’s office, and my dad worked at the SPCA, while also working 90 hours a month being a reserve police officer. So I spent a majority of my time with my mom growing up. My dad later on became a code enforcement officer, so he left the SPCA, but still continued with being a police officer on top of that. Once my mom became pregnant with my sister, my parents decided that they were financially stable enough for my mom to quit her job to stay home with me and my sister. Bullying within an elementary school begins right from the very first day of school. By the end of Kindergarten, over 20% of students report being bullied within that year. By the end of elementary school, 9 out of 10 students report being bullied at one time or another. The students, who bully during elementary school, are more likely to have it carry on with them for their middle school and school years. The aggressive and violent behaviors towards students in elementary school not only carry on after graduation from high school, but they end up having criminal records.
When I was 11 I watched my mother abruptly become a single parent responsible for four daughters, two of which were still in diapers. I became the full time babysitter and raised my two younger sisters for years, despite being a child myself, while my mom worked several jobs at a time.
Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
I have been bullied all my life, I just took it from kids, clearly I did not have a backbone. For each school I attended, I was always the easy target. I let kids tease me, talk behind my back, and call me names. It seemed like it didn’t matter if I told my parents or someone at school, nothing changed. I never really felt that I could tell someone and have things be different. Due to all the teasing, I would often become distracted and lose focus on my assignments. It got worse each year to the point where half the time I would just be in my own little world to get away from the teasing.
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past.
