The Effects of Bullying Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. One feels bad when mistreated for no good reason in a school environment which is meant to be a learning institution. Depression is increased as mistreatment continues to be harsh and this greatly affects the performance of the victim. Some will have altered feeding and sleeping cycles. According to NICHD research “Those who bully others, those who are bullied, and those who bully and are bullied—are at increased risk for depression.” This proves that a victim or even the bully is at a great risk of being depressed. (“How Does Bullying Affect Health & Well-being?”). I vividly remember coming home from school almost every single day feeling depressed. I would not be able to anything all day other than cry and feel lonely. Everyday I went to school it become worse for me. I thought that high school would be a new start and I would do just fine but I was wrong. The students always wanted to start drama to look “cool” and with my luck they would always pick on me. I was again, called mean names but it didn 't stop there. Everyday I experienced something new I would be pushed around during lunch lines and I would always get dirty looks and when I walked to my class I would get called a “terrorist” just because of my religion. The emotional torture that the victim gets after a prolonged torture is what makes them think of killing themselves. Bullying also has effects on the institution where it’s reputation is greatly destroyed. Fear is a major factor that thrives in the mind of the victim. The fear of humiliation and discrimination consumes the victim creating extreme levels of stress, which can have fatal outcomes. The sufferer becomes reserved and no longer goes to school or participates in activities they once enjoyed. In addition, the victim has a lack of appetite and sleeps constantly, which are both symptoms of depression (Bullying and Suicide). Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. It only takes one bad experience to change your opinion on something. Imagine if you went through this same bad experience for months, or better yet years. Your whole personality, how you view yourself, and others changes drastically. This is what it feels like to be bullied. Bullying is a serious issue in America, especially among children and young adults. From kindergarten all the way up until my sophomore year of high school, I was a victim of bullying. Being bullied changed how I viewed myself and others, what my values and morals were, and it shaped me into the person I am today.

Boys tend to be more physically bullied as girls are more prone to being bullied verbally. According to the National Conference of State Legislature, boys who are often bullied can be five times as likely to be more or severely depressed and four times more likely to be suicidal. Girls are three times more likely to be severely depressed and eight times more likely to be suicidal. Some children are afraid to go to school, which can lead to poor grades or lack of concentration. It is hard for students to focus at school when they are worried about their bully. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to school violence.

Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care.
