After I graduate college, I want to give back to my community by partaking in a mentorship role for young people in my community. Through my involvement in cheerleading and my local 4-H program, my life has been largely affected by the mentors that I have had in these programs. My cheer coaches have always pushed me to be the best and my 4-H leaders have demonstrated the value of the hard work. They have been so influential that I can say that I would not be the person that I am today without them. Therefore, I would really like to have that same role in another kid’s life. I want to be a positive example in a child’s life and help them to change the world for the better. In small ways, I have already started this goal as I have been active
My first experience that involved contribution to a community was in an organization known as girls as pearls. In this organization we participated in many volunteer activities, both domestic and global such as making dresses for girls in africa or volunteering at the samaritan ministry. Consequently, this early volunteerism experience influenced my involvement in the community as a high school student. I became involved in organizations such as key club, an organization focused in volunteerism. Additionally, I began to tutor middle school students and volunteering at the local church. Many of the volunteer activities that I have participate in involved children and this due to the reason that I want to be able to become a positive guide and role model for children. I want to contribute to their motivation of continuing their education and to reach for goals that they believe they can achieve. As a hispanic american I have been provided the opportunity of experiencing life from two different viewpoints which has provided me with various life lessons that aided in my development in becoming a successful and well- rounded
Outside of Academics, I have spent hundreds of hours helping my community and bettering the lives of others. To elaborate, I spent this time volunteering in church youth ministries, tutoring various levels of mathematics, and serving as Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) in Boy Scouts. Of all the service I have done, I believe I have improved the lives of others most remarkably through my role as SPL. In this position, I have had the opportunity to forge the future leaders of our community by instilling them with a strong moral compass, various leadership skills, and inspiring them to achieve highly. I accomplished this through a combination of acting as a role model and as a leader, which has given me countless opportunities to inspire and teach them through my actions. As I laced up my cheer shoes, I glanced up, I noticed the fresh-faced cheerleaders who timidly walked into the gym. They reminded me of me at that age, afraid that they didn't have what it took to be a cheerleader. However, as practices went on, they became more confident in their abilities. Volunteering my time was well worth it, I got to see the cheerleaders grow into more confident cheerleaders and people.

Volunteering at a children’s crisis treatment facility, volunteering with Special Olympics, coaching children’s sports teams for 10 years and working as a substitute education assistant has increased my understanding of childhood development. Grandmound Elementary School provides me with opportunities to strengthen my leadership and collaboration skills, through teaching art (as a volunteer) to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and serving as PTA president. I was able to implement many enriching opportunities for students in areas of art, science, and reading. I learned to work as a team, set targets, achieve goals, give and receive guidance. Participating in these activities has confirmed that working with families and particularly children are my purpose.

I have grown up in a small town on a fifth-generation family farm. I have spent the last nine years as an active 4-H member in Washington County, and I also spent fifteen years training in dance. Being a farm girl, a dancer and a 4-H member taught me the values and morals I hold myself accountable to. Being involved on the farm and in 4-H has taught me an incredible work ethic and an appreciation for agriculture and livestock. As a dancer I have developed a unique grace and athleticism. As a Metro 4-H Ambassador for the past four years, I have mastered incredible leadership and speaking skills that will be a great asset as I enter college. I hope to give back to the George Fox community as a member of leadership organizations and clubs, and bring my unique perspective to the student body.
Working at a daycare has opened my eyes to how many kids look up to us high schoolers- especially athletes. Whenever a child tells me they want to be like me, it truly puts a smile on my face. This makes feel like I accomplished being a good example for these kids. I want them to be able to see what can happen when a person makes good decisions. I love knowing how many little kids look up to me; it helps me become a better person.
Last fall, I decided to join a mentoring program because I wanted to give back to my community and share my experience with others. My goal was to educate young students about why school is important while assisting them with school related or personal problems. I was assigned to go to an elementary school every week for two hours and work with two elementary students. During those two hours, my mentees and I would talk, do homework, play games, and read. By being a mentor, I had to manage the time and organize each session by incorporating what I had learned in class.
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a charitable organization that I have been involved with for four years. “[They] believe that every child should have the opportunity to reach his or her full potential” (Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, 2011). This mission statement shows their true dedication to allowing children to not be held back by their lack of socialization at a younger age and to be able to find who they are and make a difference in the world. I decided to pick this experience in particular because of the huge impact that it had on my life. Although we met only once a week it was an experience I will forever remember. I had one mentee in particular that showed such great advances in the year that we spent together. This little was in grade 5 at the time and was very shy; having being raised by one parent he had a lack of parental figures in his life. I develop and deliver technical solutions to collection of applications used by retail giants across the globe. My responsibilities have given me scenarios to put on my problem solving and interpersonal skills in real life situations. Frequent interactions with client aroused in me, an urge to get into a management consultant role. But, with time I realized that I have to upgrade my skill-sets and make myself more relevant and attractive to the job market. With this in mind, I used my presidency in the Clements Key Club to help both the people in the community we serve and our own members to become better citizens. After the work I have been doing at Clements has come to an end, I hope to continue helping the community throughout college. I want to join organizations like Key Club to volunteer my time, but I also want to use my talent to mentor high school programs. The best way to help people and grow the community is through children.
This school year I would like to organize a Mentor program. The purpose of this program would be for teachers to mentor students who lack motivation and have a low self- esteem. An individual must have self-awareness, a strong value system, and strong personal qualities before contributing positively to a group, much less to a community. The teachers’ job is to help the student build personal character and values. Students must learn the importance of a strong self-worth and its correlation to social change. If you are not sure of who you are and lack the ability to stand firm on your beliefs, no matter who you are, you will become a doormat for anyone that enters your life. As in the following
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart.
