Saint Bernadette Soubirous or Saint Bernadette of Lourdes was born on January 7, 1844, from Occitan, France. She died at the age of thirty-five on April 16, 1879, which eventually became her feast day. Saint Bernadette is considered to be part of the “Incorruptibles.” Incorruptibility is the belief that prevents the normal decomposition of human bodies after death which represents as a sign of a person’s holiness. Her early life began as a frail young child who grew up in a humble family but suffered in poverty. She was often ill with diseases and had caught many widespread sicknesses, such as asthma and the cholera epidemic of 1855. However, visions and miracles were documented in her life. Her important quotations were, “I cannot promise you happiness in this life, only in the next,” and “My job is to be ill.” Saint Bernadette had a total of eighteen visions of the blessed virgin. Mary was seen at the grotto of Massabielle outside Lourdes when young Bernadette was collecting firewood with her sisters and friends. In the 16th appearance of the Virgin Mary, she uttered the words, “I am the Immaculate Conception,” while her hands were folded over her breasts and her eyes stared at the ceiling. St. Bernadette of Lourdes was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1933. She became the patroness of the sick, of the family, and of holy property. Prayers such as the Novena to St. Bernadette were contributed for her. Each prayer of the Novena is short but efficient and must be said with the lips in order to gain the full indulgences. The prayer begins on April 6 and ends on April 16.
