The constellations represent 14 men and women, 19 land animals, 9 birds, 10 water creatures, two insects, one head of hair, a dragon, a serpent, a flying horse, two centaurs, a river and 29 non-living objects. The practice was most likely common due to humanity trying to make sense of their world as well as using the stars to travel. People needed something to refer to back then, which is why the constellations were named. The ancient constellation name makers probably meant for them to be symbolic representations of their favorite animals or heroes from mythology and other stories of the time.
