Social Work Practice Reflection

Social work practice entails the professional application of social work values, principles, and techniques. I learned several skills for my field practice in my micro class. One thing I learned is to have a client scale the problem. I learned this during the solutions-focused assessment questions lesson. I learned to ask the client what the problem would look like if it were resolved and how the problem would look if it were a ten and then if it were a one. I also learned to tell them to focus on what they want instead of what they do not want. Another skill I learned during my micro class is to not interpret ones behavior or actions. I had not realized how easy it was to interpret ones actions until I did role-plays and sculpting in the class and were asked to describe what was happening without interpreting. In instances where I think I know what it means I need to be straight forward with the client and ask them if my interpretations of the action or statement is correct. During this process we speak with client to see what it is they are going through and what their goals are. I have used many of the skills and theories I have learned throughout the social work program while I have been in the field. One theory I have used in Erikson’s theory. I use this theory most when speaking with kids. It helps me to further assess where they are in life and what other underlying needs there may be. Another theory I have used is the life cycle stage. These stages help me to see what the crisis may be within a family and why they are struggling. I have had many couples come in for an intake and report that they are having financial issues and because of that issue it has lead to other issues.
