The Remedial Model In Professional Social Work

There are many models and theories that shape the practice of social work and the ways in which professional social workers engage with their clients. Most of the models and theories that shape the practice are interchangeable and closely related or intertwined ideas but the oldest models like the Remedial Model, Reciprocal Model and the Social Goals models are the foundation for social work practice and the models and theories that govern it. In order to fully grasp the concepts of any of the resulting models and how to use any model in your practice, you as a practitioner must first master the definition and conceptional use of these models in practice.

This model is similar to socialization groups in that this model helps the clients build a report within the group and foster mutual aid networks that can be used as a tool for coping even after the group terminates. Unlike a socialization group this group also has another function and that is to help the clients gain valuable skills that will help them in life when they are experiencing a crisis or other issue that causes them emotional distress. This model is different from the remedial model because the reciprocal model is group focused and relays less on worker activity and more on group cohesiveness and mutual support to work through issues after a coping tool is learned. The worker would have regular contact with the clients but would enable and encourage the clients to look to one another in times of crisis for the solutions and help. The remedial model targets groups that need to relearn behaviors that are societally deemed abnormal and is an individual focused model. The reciprocal model is a group focused model that relies on the group to teach new skills and aid each other to move past obstacles in their individual lives and the social goals model uses both these techniques to ensure that people feel included in a community and because as humans we feel the need to be liked and socialize changes a persons
