I am applying for the Masters of Social Work Program because of my dream of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. This journey began at a very young age, as my passion for people flourished. For me, childhood consisted of long summers, volunteering at nursing homes and working with friends to do constructive projects around the community. During my teenage years, I was well-known for my loving spirit and compassion for people. I was a problem solver and as well the go to person for family and friends. This passion continued throughout my teenage years, as I volunteered at the Department of Veterans Affairs, assisting disable vets. By the time I reached adulthood, my love for people and the quest to help had become my profession. While …show more content…
This experience allowed me to work in a helping capacity serving people from various ethnic backgrounds, religions, cultures, age groups, gender, social class, and sexual orientation. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, my job duties involved providing medical assistance and support to clients who were incapable of helping themselves. This experience allowed me to recognize my personal strengths and as well limitations. My strengths include: focused driven, excellent communicator, leader, compassionate, honest, and respectful. Choosing a career is a very important aspect to people’s lives. One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I want to have the ability to touch people’s lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to college to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.
The MSW degree along with my bachelors in psychology gives me a great opportunity to build my career as a social worker who will strive to act as a leader and empower others to help those in need. I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.
What does it mean to become a social worker? Why was I committing two years of my life to school after renouncing further education? I asked myself this after I applied, waited anxiously for my acceptance letter and scrambled to figure out the finances after I was accepted. I could not have guessed that the first day of the Micro Human Behavior Social Environment (SWG 510) would capture my attention and thrust me into the professional world of Social Work. As I learned more about what it meant to become a social worker, I found myself aligning to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ethical Standards as reviewed through Foundation Course I’s first chapters.
My interest in the Advanced Standing program began when I was nearing the end of my Bachelors program for Social Work. I knew I wanted to automatically enroll in an MSW program right away, but dreaded the thought that it would take me an additional two years to complete a degree in which I am so desperately seeking. How fortunate I am to be able to have an opportunity such as this towards achieving my goals of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My interest in this program would encourage me to gain a wealth of knowledge to better serve and advocate for and within my community; the kind of knowledge that can make a difference in the lives of others. The Advanced Standing program will provide me with the ability to not only serve others
I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. I also believe strongly that people are inherently good and capable of doing good. All together, through different day to day experiences and my drive to do good and help facilitate change are just some of the reasons I am applying to a professional degree of social
Today I will discuss how my upbringing, life experiences, and my original major lead me to have a desire to be a social worker as well as present why I believe I would be a good fit for the social work program at Idaho State University.
As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my main area of interest is in providing resources and encouragement for individuals with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every possible effort in assisting these individuals with finding the means to satisfy their needs.
I want to obtain my bachelor’s degree and secure a job as a direct social worker. This will allow me to gain experience and broaden my knowledge in the field of social work. All this experience will help me determine exactly what field I want to specialize in as I further my education. While working as a direct social worker, I am going back to school to obtain my master’s degree. Ultimately, I want to obtain a master’s degree and go into the clinical setting. Once I earn my master’s degree, I want to immediately start working under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker to obtain the hours I need to take the state exam. Master of Science in Social Work 1. Motivation for social service and/or social justice, social work education, and a career in the profession During my undergraduate work, I deepened my knowledge in how the needs of individuals, their systems, and society as a whole are interrelated. Through this intellectual pursuit, I’m grateful for the opportunity to have expanded my learning and to grow personally. After graduation I began to understand that a gap exists between my calling to deliver care and support to those in need and the lack of employment opportunities available to me not having a master’s degree.
Along with my determination to help others, there are also personal life experiences that contribute to my longing for the social work

I chose to go into social work because the profession is not only my dream career, but my passion as well. The ability to call myself a social worker is not just my job title, but part of my identity. I have always wanted to make an impact on our world and be a leader in my generation, and social work is where my personal skill set and strengths will be best put to use. As the last 4 years in my undergraduate studies have rolled along, I have developed my unique, personal traits alongside brilliant minds belonging to the future social workers of America. Many of which plan on going right out into the field and using their degrees to make an immediate impact in their local communities. For me, I would love the opportunity to further hone my
