Personal Statement of Allisa L. Schmidt for MSW: Advance Standing A. The Profession of Social Work as a Career Goal I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society. I began thinking about how difficult it must be to try to function in the world with a mental disorder. As a result, I see people with a mental illness as vulnerable population that I would ideally like to help people with therapy. I found the dynamics of the human mind fascinating. Particularly, I found it exciting that the human mind is so influential in the development as well as the recovery from mental illness. Once I decided to major in Social Work, I began by taking the courses Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare Institutions. My professor informed me that if I got my Master’s Degree in Social Work, I would be able to become a mental health therapist, as well as help vulnerable people who needed assistance with maneuvering the criminal justice system. Since Social Work as a profession is dedicated to social justice and to service and empowerment of vulnerable populations... ... middle of paper ... ...l, political, economic, and cultural institutions and relationships inequities. I have never been dismissed or been asked to resign from a position as a result of an infraction and/or convicted of an assault or a felony. At SUNY at Fredonia I have taken courses Fundamentals of Communication and Mass Media and Society. The Social Work courses are intensive speaking requiring group and individual presentations. I have done academic presentations on social work populations I want to work with and effectiveness of a juvenile delinquency program. As previously mentioned, I run a group at my internship called Wellness Self-Management. In my employment at Claddagh Commission, I am in the role of explaining medical and behavioral symptoms to service providers and explaining agency documentation to parents of residents. I do not speak any other languages beside English.
