Social media, despite the fact that it is relatively new to the world, has strong ties into everyday life. Millions of people log on everyday to update their status, tweet about events, and stay connected with friends and family. It may sound like the perfect tool to stay in touch with distant people and make new connections, and it is great, but it is not perfect by any means. Social media can have serious negative effects on its users. Some of these side effects can include lack of face-to-face interaction, weakened family connections, addiction, and depression to list a few. One downside of the information on social media is more often then not, the information is invalid or skewed. Upon seeing a story, one should not automatically assume it is true; instead one should use the story as a starting point for further research. The final topic that will be covered on the positive aspect is the positive effects social media has on relationships. Because of social media, it is possible to maintain closer relationships with people over long distances. It can also allow people to meet each other in a way was not possible twenty years ago. Tinder, for example, lets you see other people in your area and, based on who is interested in who, allows you to start talking to people one may have never met otherwise. Although there are many positive aspects of social media, we cannot simply ignore the possible risks associated with using it. Some of these risk can have negative effects on individuals, families, and even society as a whole.
