Thomas Dekker once said, “Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” Society says that people have to get as much done as one possibly can before going to bed and that a few hours of sleep can go a long away. This is a myth. Not getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep a night (varies for different ages) is known as sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation has become a very common problem in American’s today and can lead to serious negative consequences such as crankiness, weight gain, and a lessened ability to think logically and clearly. What they do not know is that depriving their body of sleep will cause them to gain weight. According to Nanci Hellmich, it decreases a fullness hormone and increases a hunger hormone which causes late night snacking, over eating, and feeling hungry all the time (par. 2). There have been studies that have proven this but it is also obvious. When someone is tired and has no time to sleep, what do they do? They go get a cup of coffee, a donut, or something that has high amounts of sugar in it to “pick them up”. Or they skip going to the gym because they are too tired to work out. This idea is believable to most sleep deprived people because they can’t think as clearly. Part of this is that the human brain doesn’t process information as fast as it could. This is dangerous when people drive late at night, or early in the morning, because they cannot react fast enough to other drivers and the stop light. Decreasing the amount of time sleeping by only an hour and a by half, diminishes daytime alertness by 32% (Feature, par. 4). It becomes difficult to concentrate and people get confused more easily with the less and less sleep they get. The symptoms of sleep deprivation are extremely close to those of someone who is drunk. Someone who is drunk wouldn’t, or at least shouldn’t, go out and drive, perform an operation on someone, or fly a plane. So why do we have jobs like these? The average American needs to be more educated in sleep deprivation so no problems and accidents
