The United States started out as truly one nation that was indivisible. This however was changed when slavery was brought into the equation. Within the US there was the south, who was all for it. They believed that slaves were good for our country and no matter how horribly they were treated they brought our country a stable form of income. Then there was the North. The North had the complete opposite take on Slavery. The citizens believed that it was inhumane and cruel to be putting someone up to those types of conditions. Slavery was the utter most leading cause of the Civil war because it created such an intense divide between the northern and southern population and in the eyes of the people, the only way to compromise was to go to war.
Throughout the years, many people have been taught that the reason the Civil War happened, was to abolish slavery all through the United States. The United States began to dissatisfy some of its citizens and so the concerns of sectionalism, or the split of the country began to arise. There was a continuous riff between the south and the north over a few issues, a major one being slavery. The south argued that the slaves were necessary to support the southern economy. In Half Slave and Half Free: The Roots of Civil War, Bruce Levine attributes the cause of the Civil War to the incompatibility between North and South that, in Levine’s opinion, is connected to slavery. Levine claims that from the beginning when the discussion of slavery was left out of the Constitution, a wedge was created between North and South that eventually affected all aspects of life: socially, politically, religiously, and economically, with the North focusing on manufacturing that relied upon free-labor while the South’s cash crop depended upon slave labor. This division caused the two sides to be incompatible and with both sides unwilling to compromise and the interpretation of the Constitution unable to lead to a firm decision, the only foreseen end was through disunion.
In the years paving the way to the Civil War, both north and south were disagreeable with one another, creating the three “triggering” reasons for the war: the fanaticism on the slavery issue, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the separation of the Democratic Party. North being against the bondage of individuals and the South being for it, there was no real way to evade the clash. For the south slavery was a form of obtaining a living, without subjugation the economy might drop majorly if not disappear. In the North there were significant ethical issues with the issue of subjugation. Amazing measures to keep and dispose of subjugation were taken and there was never a genuine adjusted center for bargain. Despite the fact that there were a lot of seemingly insignificant issues, the fundamental thing that divided these two states was bondage and the flexibilities for it or against. With these significant extremes, for example, John Brown and Uncle Tom's Cabin, the south felt disdain towards the danger the Northerners were holding against their alleged flexibilities. The more hatred the South advanced, the more combative they were to anything the Northerners did. Northerners were irritated and it parted Democrats over the issue of bondage and made another Republican gathering, which included: Whigs, Free Soilers, Know Nothings and previous Democrats and brought about a split of segments and abbreviated the street to common war. Southerners loathed the insubordination of the north and started to address how they could stay with the Union.
What started as a war to prevent the South from seceding quickly turned into a war against slavery following President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. At the start of the Civil War, both Union and Confederate sides believed that they would had a quick and decisive victory. The North’s population and industry was vastly greater than the South’s, but the South had superior military leadership, a large white population that was united against invading Union armies and a hope that France or Britain would intervene on their behalf.
For generations students have been taught an over-simplified version of the civil war and even now I am just coming to a full understanding of the truth. The civil war was a terrible rift in our nation, fought between the northern states (known as the union) and the southern states (the Confederate States of America). The people’s opinions were so divided over the issues of the civil war that, in some families, brother was pit against brother. Eventually, the south succumbed to the north and surrendered on April 9th, 1865 but not before the war had caused 618,000 deaths, more than any other war in U.S. history.(1) In truth, many believe this horrible war was fought purely over the issue of slavery. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am not denying that slavery was a major cause and issue of the civil war, but social and economic differences as well as states’ rights were just as important issues and I will be discussing all three.
Between the economic, political, and social quarrels that evolved throughout the 1850's, the North and the South underwent many changes that led to the start of the Civil War. The most attributing factor to this war was that of a moral dispute between two sections who both wanted different things. Slavery became the issue that spread across the nation and was disputed back and forth between the North and South sections of the country.
Slavery caused a rift in the American society. The issue of slavery in America divided citizens into two groups, pro-slavery and abolitionists. Unlike other countries America could not decide this issue peacefully. The two groups fought constantly, the issue would not be settled peacefully but would end in a violent war. The pro slavery group accepted and approved of slavery, while the abolitionists viewed slavery in a different light. The abolitionist disagreed with slavery and all it stood for.
The existence of slavery was the central element of the conflict of the north and south. Other problems existed that led to this succession but none were as big as the slavery issue. The only way to avoid the war was to abolish slavery, but this was not able to be done because slavery is what kept the south running. When the south seceded it was said by Abraham Lincoln that “ a house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.” Because slavery formed two opposing societies and slavery could never be abolished, the civil war was inevitable. These were all the reasons why the south seceded from the union, this succession was eminent and there was no plausible way to avoid it.
Before the Civil War, nearly 4 million African Americans were enslaved in the South. Slavery during the Pre-Civil war period was widely recognized and used in the southern states. This controversial practice caused lots of tension in the country. The South used slaves to tend its large plantations and perform other duties. While the Northern states one by one had abolished slavery, they felt like the practice was wrong ethically and morally. Southerners justified the practice with legal reasons, religious, and economic arguments.
When the Civil War broke out, there were already some Southern states that seceded from the North and claimed it’s own independency. They didn’t agree with the North’s way of thinking of slavery, as the South needed it for their economic benefit. They socially banned together to create their own army and fight the Union.
The idea of the United States being broken into two areas, the North and the South, did not just exist in Civil War. These two areas of the United States were different ever since the colonial days. However, this division grew more distinct in the 1800s due to the North and South’s different economies being affected unequally by rapid economic expansion. The North’s slave-free, industrial economy multiplied while the South’s slave dependent cash crop economy was barely affected by the growth. The new economic development during this time caused cultural and political differences to intensify, creating a rift within the country. One might ask, what caused such internal tension within the most powerful nation in the world? During the nineteenth century, America was an infant nation, but toppling the entire world with its social, political, and economic innovations. In addition, immigrants were migrating from their native land to live the American dream (Roark 405-407). Meanwhile, hundreds of thousand African slaves were being traded in the domestic slave trade throughout the American south. Separated from their family, living in inhumane conditions, and working countless hours for days straight, the issue of slavery was the core of the Civil War (Roark 493-494). The North’s growing dissent for slavery and the South’s dependence on slavery is the reason why the Civil War was an inevitable conflict.
