From Communism to Democracy, the Czech Republic has undergone many political changes. Not only have the people of the Czech Republic endured many changes within the government throughout the years, but they also had to deal with a “velvet divorce” with Slovakia in 1993, with whom they previously formed the country Czechoslovakia. Since before the separation of Czechoslovakia, the United States had been a supporter of the country and its independence and democracy. Being in an alliance with the United States since 1999 has created an impact on the Czech Republic and its development. For example, although their Constitutions are similar in some aspects, they also differ in the fact that the Czech Constitution is divided not only into amendments, but the amendments are also divided into chapters. The chapters are sectioned into the different branches of government and include the corresponding amendments to those branches. The United States’ Constitution is merely just divided into the amendments, grouped in sections but not separated in any way. Another difference that can be found between the two countries is in the Executive Branch. The Czech Republic does have an elected President, but they also have an appointed Prime Minister. The Prime Minister takes over a large role from the President, as compared to the United States President who controls many aspects of the Executive Branch. The Prime Minister is named the Head of the Government, which organizes the activities and meetings of the government officials. In the United States, the President generally takes over these responsibilities. A final noted difference that separates the Czech Republic from the United States is the differences in the major political parties. The Czech Republic’s main political parties include these: the Czech Social Democratic Party, the Civic Democratic Party, the Christian Democratic Union-Czechoslovak People's Party, the Greens, the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia. The United States is simply composed of the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, and the Independent Party. The Czech Republic is composed of many different parties, but many of them are deemed as Democratic.
