Recommended: Why is the US involved with Vietnam

Should the United States have participated in the Vietnam War? Some people felt that the US should have been there for two reasons. The first reason was the US was attempting to establish a stable democracy. The second reason was that our participation in Vietnam helped the US win the Cold War. Others believed the US should not have participated for two reasons. One reason was that the South Vietnamese government was a brutal dictatorship. Another reason was our strategy for winning the war was inept. While it appeared that we were trying to spread democracy and win the Cold War., in truth we were supporting a mini-Hitler, and our war strategy had little chance of success.

The first reason some people claim the US should’ve been in the Vietnam War was because of their belief in trying to establish a democracy. The US had attempted this before. If other attempts did not work, then the US shouldn’t have been in the Vietnam War. An article called Vietnam and the Cold War said, “But...power,” (Document D). The article clearly argues that we were there to encourage a democracy, but it was the Soviet Union who ruined our try. But this is wrong. The Vietnam War was one of many. One reason some people argue the US should have been in the Vietnam War is because of the belief the US was trying to help establish a democracy there. The Vietnam war helping America win the cold war was another reason people believe the US was justified in the Vietnam war. Others believe that the US should not have been there because they were supporting a corrupt government, another reason is that American warfare was excessive and abusively killed many innocent civilians and ruined the land.
