What do you think that the rising controversy of teachers being armed in schools. Many people think that teachers being armed in schools is a terrific idea while others believe it is a terrible idea. There are many ideas about what is going to happen once teachers are armed. Many fear that arming teachers is the right step to securing the safety of students at school, though they fear that the teachers won’t be trained as well as other law enforcement. In some cases teachers already bring guns to school.
Many schools across the country have multiple reasons to want to arm staff members. In order for a staff member to carry or even be considered to be licensed to carry in schools they must complete 80 hours of training. This training includes use of force training, weapon proficiency, legal aspects, and first aid classes. After this training teachers have to be approved by school board and law enforcement agencies. Having a teacher carrying is more cost efficient too because for one resource officer to be on the job it is 50,000 dollars a year while it is around 68,000 dollars a year to train 13 staff members in the guns program. Also many schools say they trust the law enforcement but that they are just too far away and that “teachers will have more of a fighting chance.” ( Nicole CNN )

Donald trump stated that “we can't stop an active shooter but we can stop the carnage by giving teachers guns to help protect everyone in the school.” Most people who understand weaponry and guns have a permit carry and protect themselves and those around them. Teachers who don’t understand weaponry are less likely to get a permit to carry in schools then those staff members that do. President Trump stated that he believes that all teachers who would like to get the training to carry and protect in schools should be given the opportunity. ( Green New York Times
Arming teachers is deranged. Many teachers or potential teachers may shy away from their dreams or future plans of being a teacher with forcing him/her to carry guns and police student’s.
Not only will it be expensive, but it will be time consuming. The average gun safety class offered by the National Rifle Association is “six hours long, with 11 students, and costs $130” (Yamane 5). Using President Trump’s data-less statistic, let’s say that 10% of teachers in a particular district are eligible to receive gun safety training. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, on average, “there are 254 teachers in a district in Texas” (NCES). Rounding down, that means that 25 teachers in a district would receive the training. About $3250 of money would be spent on gun safety. That is money that could be used in other ways. Another aspect of gun safety training is the time commitment. As stated above, the typical gun safety course is six hours long. Personally, I would not be comfortable with only six hours of gun safety. I do not think that six hours is enough time to train teachers how to defend
Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
One reason teachers should not be able to carry guns because guns are currently illegal in schools; Guns are illegal because they are dangerous. The Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) is a federal law that was accepted in the United States in 1990. According to the GFSZA, “It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In order for teachers to carry guns, we would have to discard this law. Also, the school board would have to create a new policy, allowing teachers to carry guns. Adjusting the rules would be time consuming and confusing. Changing the GFSZA would make students tense and distract children from learning. Citizens from CNN Politics say, “72.4% of educators said they would be unlikely to bring a firearm to school if allowed to do so.” This data shows that the majority of teachers do not even want possession of a gun in the classroom. School officers have the right to carry guns, teachers should just focus on education. Not only does it create a huge responsibility, there would also need to be a large financial investment to supply guns for every school. This money would be hard to come up with, and not everyone is in favor of sacrificing money for firearms.
... a high school student, I don’t take much stock in the safety codes and drills in place to keep students safe in the event of a shooting. I would feel much safer knowing my teacher has the ability to protect the class, rather than hide and lock the door. An educator is responsible for the students in their class. They are responsible for their education and their safety while the children are in their classroom. The safety of fifteen or more students would be much more easily secured by one person if that person was armed. Promoting teachers to arm themselves also prevents school shootings; criminals don’t attack a victim that can fight back. At least 60% of school attacks would be prevented with an armed faculty warning sign. School faculty members should be armed to secure the safety of the countries students, and in hand prevent the majority of potential shootings.
In “Vulnerable Schools Need Protection: Guns, Training For Teachers may be the answer”, published in a 2008 edition of the Chicago Tribune, David McGrath argues that some teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon for protection. First, McGrath states that if a random psychotic gunman were searching for someplace to attack, his classroom would make an easy target. He feels that if he was trained and armed, his class would not be trapped without a chance of survival because he would be able to defend against the gunman. Sec...
The topic ‘Teachers should be armed” interest me so much because I have met a teacher who dealt with a school shooting and he truly believed if teachers were armed the shooting would have never occurred There have been so many cases of shooting inside of schools, innocent people getting hurt and students and even staff members not feeling safe in school. I myself have met a person who had to deal with a deadly tragedy of a shooting inside of Columbine High School watching his own students’ lives end because of 2 boys who thought taking ones live can make theirs better. This changed his whole perspective on why a teacher should be armed ‘’If teachers were armed April 20, 1999 this would have never happened”, he said. This teacher told me if he was armed that day he could have saved students’ lives because he felt helpless when the shooting happened and there was nothing to do about it. Cases like these teachers should be prepared with a weapon in handy. Having teachers armed will lower the risk of school shootings.
School shootings have the ability to be stopped. They are largely one of the worst repeated tragedies our great nation has endured, and they should be stopped today! No terrorist wants to go out in his/her infamous blaze of “glory” by failing in their attempt. Arming educators has the capability to end school shootings in this decade. “And I haven’t even touched upon the pure deterrent effect of a potential mass murderer having to worry one of his targets might be armed” (Concealed Weapons). This quote presents the very real possibility that just if teachers are armed, future shooters will reconsider and possibly not attempt it at all. Providing this overwhelming deterrent in the foremost thoughts of a would be murderer emphasizes the positive effect concealed weapons operated by teachers could
They are our first defense and would be able to react much faster than any police officer who couldn't get to the scene in time “(yes or no)”The teachers will be certified which requires a background check so all teachers carrying will be mentally stable. most of the public shootings are in gun-free areas, i.e. schools, malls, etc. By making schools gun-free it doesn't make the school safer for the children, it makes it safer for the shooter. “(yes or no) “Teachers are the first line of defense in a classroom. And it states in the 2nd Amendment that we have the right to bear arms. In Utah, the 10 years teachers have been allowed to carry guns no K-12 school shooting have occurred. Some teachers spend more time with students than their own parents do “(yes or no). I can not find a way that this is still not safe. The safety is
Schools were once traditionally viewed as a safe place for children, teenagers, and adults. The educational setting coupled with community involvement gave no reason for violence to occur in schools. As years progressed, the occurrence of violence in school shocked communities across the nation, calling for state lawmakers and school districts to produce a solution to prevent these acts from occurring. Events such as the 1999 school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado urged schools throughout the U.S. to increase their security measures with more stringent policies and procedures while spending millions of dollars on security equipment from security cameras to metal detectors. While schools increase their safety measures to prevent another major incident from occurring, such as a suspect with a firearm (active shooter) from entering school property, some of the security measures have not been effective. An example is the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, where the shooter was able to bypass a locked door which is one of the security measures the school had in place, making personnel visiting the school required to request entrance into the building (Barron).
Moreover, teachers have no experience using a gun, the situation could go from teaching to violence. According to New York times, " Teachers enter their profession to teach kids, just as law enforcement officers choose to protect citizens by force if necessary. " This means teachers should not carry guns because they are spending their time to teach. Some teachers may not even want to carry guns with them. They should not be forced to carry guns when they can just hide with their students without causing violence.
I have discussed this argument with several people and most of them are against teachers carrying guns while teaching. One main concern that I have heard is, “what if the teacher is having a bad day”, or “what if they decide to take it out on the students? And then I remind them that teacher’s go through a very rigid background investigation and are trusted individuals! We must trust our teachers and their judgment. If we feel comfortable enough with these teachers to send our kids to them five days a week, f...
So i think teacher having guns in school will protect not only them but the students. Teachers should be allowed to have guns in school because it will keep the kids safe if a violat person comes on campus the teachers can protect them. The first issue is teachers should be allowed to have guns in school “The shooter shot his father and brother before carjacking a vehicle and forcing the driver to take him to the college, allowing the driver to leave once there but killing more people.” (ProCon.org)
Allowing teachers to carry guns could help lower school shootings. “While some believe tighter gun controls are the answer, others believe the best solution comes in giving more people — like teachers and administrators — more training and more access to firearms that can save lives as well as take them away” (Evensen guns and teachers). “Our organization
Since the first tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, the debate over gun control has heated up. Gun is an invention for protecting people, but it is also the cause of many catastrophic conflicts. Therefore, the debate between the right to carry guns to schools and the ban on carrying guns to schools is continuing. After all massacres in the school, I think students and teachers should be allowed to carry gun to the school for many reasons such as protect themselves against an intruder, help teachers and students more confident to study and work, bullies do not dare to bully others when they have gun.
