Recommended: Effects of rewards on students

Can you imagine having a job for nine months out of the year that makes you work from 8:15 AM until 3:30 PM on every weekday and not getting paid for all of your hard, tedious work? To most of you that sounds ridiculous. That’s because it is. Students have to go through this painful process from September to May and usually don’t have anything to show for it. They dedicate their whole lives to getting all A’s on their report card and when they finally do all they usually get is a pat on the back. Thus, students should get paid for having good grades because it takes lots of hard work to get those grades, it would cause more students to strive for good grades, and it would eliminate the need for a job, which would allow for more studying time.

First off, the reason why students should get paid for having good grades is that it takes a lot of time and effort to get those grades. For many students it takes many hours of late night studying and constantly going over flashcards to achieve the elusive 4.0 GPA. Shouldn’t these students be compensated for all of their hard work. Many people would say that the students are expected to do this and should not be rewarded but as we all know very few students actually try to put in this kind of work and shouldn’t those who try the hardest receive a little …show more content…

Many high school students have a job that they go to after school which takes up their time that they could be using for homework and studying. If we were to pay these students for their good grades then they would no longer have the need for a job and could get even better grades and would even be able to take harder classes because of the extra time they would have to study and for homework.     To begin with, I agree with Vogel that grades are being equated to money by many students. Vogel claims that because students see this way, they do things for the entirely wrong reason! I can relate to what Vogel is saying here seeing as I too am a student. Being a student it sometimes feels like the work I turn in is a product, and in a sense the instructor is quality control. Taking a class is supposedly to place students into a learning environment, but instead it feels like it’s a business sometimes. The atmosphere usually makes me want do as little work as possible to get a decent or passing grade.
