There are many situations in the modern day where too many people cause controversy about paying college athletes. They see this as the coarse issue, but paying the athletes will not solve the big problem that you do not think about at first. Although, there are many college athletes that are struggling to get through life and a salary for their hard work will be appreciated, it just will not solve the big issue. This issue would just become worsened.
In the article “Cracking the Cartel” written by Theodore Ross, he explains why football and basketball players should not be paid that are taking a part in college athletics. This article discusses the United States football and basketball programs that are being supervised by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which in the title and many times in the article is being referred to be a cartel. Ross states that we must remove money from college sports and leave the good things: sports and schools. They will not be able to buy new uniforms or any gear that is needed. There surely will not be a salary for the head coach and the assistant coaches. This would just ruin everything that in the past years, we have tried to build up. If money gets taken away, there will not be a division 1. College athletes should be paid because of the huge amount of money being made off of the use of their athletic ability. The college basketball and football games that everyone watches on TV is no longer just a game, it is a business. The colleges and arenas hosting such events are not doing it solely for the love of sport, they are doing it for the money that will flow generously into their banking accounts. The coaches also, they are not volunteers, they are not there just for their love of the game, coaching is their job. The athletic directors, coaching staff, and event staff are all doing their job to put food on the table. The fans are watching the game, the players, the ones who are making huge sacrifices to be on the court. The athletes are the only ones in this circle of business who are putting in the hours, maybe even the most hours, and not getting a paycheck. Marcus Camby, a basketball player for the Toronto Raptors, admitted he took money and jewelry, from somebody who wanted to be his agent, while he was playing at the University of Massachusetts. This was one of many incidents that involved a player accepting money and other gifts from an agent and/or booster. I believe that college athletes deserve to be paid in some fashion. They devote their whole life to their sport, whether or not they are the starters, and most will not go on to the pros, even though they contribute to the team. They sell tickets, jerseys, T-shirts etc. for their school, and see none of the money. Coaches sign six figure deals with shoe companies, like Nike, Reebok, Converse, and the players are the ones wearing the shoes and jerseys, the coaches have on whatever they want. Even though just recently the NCAA Committee allowed athletes to get a job; between schoolwork, and practices, they don’t have enough time to find a job. Most of the kids come from poor backgrounds, and don’t have enough money to do normal college things, like going out to eat, going on a date, or out to the movies.
