College is an important stepping stone for millions of students around the world. The last thing these students want to think about is watching their backs as they walk to class. Parents should not have to worry about the safety of their children away at college. However, schools are turning into one-sided war zones. No student is allowed to carry a firearm on a university campus, yet young adults are being gunned down left and right.
We as a society can at least even the playing field. I am for giving students the right to carry firearms on campuses in an effort to even the odds, help students feel safer, and train them for emergency situations. The news is constantly filled with headlines about college campuses turned into war zones, but

Safety is key in choosing a school, because students need to know if they can walk the campus without feeling threatened. As a college student myself, the ability to leave my dorm and know that my things will still be there when I get back is important. Knowing that I can walk my campus any time of day or night without feeling unsafe is reassuring. Imagine if an active shooter appeared on a campus and killed several students because they were defenseless, waiting for campus police to show up. By the time the police arrive, I twould be too late. However, if a student had a firearm, the shooter would have been taken down before he or she could pull the trigger. The worst that might happen is one severe injury. I prefer no harm done to students, but if a single injury occurs and no students are killed, I choose that option over the multiple deaths caused by a slow response time.
Unfortunately, not every situation will end the way we want it to. Society relies on percentages to weigh the pros and cons of anything. If the percentage of student deaths related to school shootings decreases, then thats all that matters. Nothing can be perfect—that is just the way life works. No one can heal all the cruel-minded criminals in this world, but we can put a bandage on the issue. A college parent should not have to bury a child, nor does a university have to mourn the loss of a fellow
People who disagree with me think that there should be concealed gun carry on college campuses because it will make the students safer in a risky situation by making the students able to shoot down and stop the shooter. Students for Concealed Carry, an organization for concealed gun carry on campus, say, “The crux of the SGFS essay is the undeniable fact that college campuses typically have lower crime rates than the cities in which they reside” (642). In “Why Our Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Handguns”, an article against concealed handgun carry, states that, “Our colleges and universities are safe sanctuaries for learning.” (633).
Secondly, some people believe guns should not be allowed on campus because they may go off by accident. True, a gun may go off by accident, but according to, Students for Concealed Carry, out of 150 college campuses that allow concealed carry, there have been only three accidental discharges (Common). Two of them were by staff and one by a student. All three of the accidental discharges resulted in non-life-threatening discharges in which no one was injured (Common). All three incidents could have been prevented through proper training and practice, such as wearing a
Taking privileges away from the majority of mentally stable, healthy, hard working Americans just because a percentage of alcoholics, drug addicts, gang members, and mentally ill individuals are to blame for the school shootings, murders and suicides, would just be insane. So, why is the government trying to implement more strict gun laws for the people that don't do these heinous crimes. The debate on if the government should take the guns away from all the citizens in order to stop these crimes would not stop those who are committing the crimes in the first place. Then, the question would be, how would we know who really has the guns and where they are?
Of all school shootings only 47 percent of them are on college campuses. The other 53 percent are in elementary through high school grade campuses. These numbers can be drastically cut back by allowing concealed and open carry on college campuses. Students should be allowed to open carry on campus because it increases the protection of both themselves and the public.
College is seen as the beginning of young adult life, but campus crime can prevent the continuation of that life.Yet, campuses still prohibit students from carrying essential self defense weapons. This is most likely due to their ignorance of the benefits involved with allowing campus carry. Campus carry improves the overall environment of a college and promotes safety. Students should be allowed to carry guns on campus due to the current lack of protection offered through the university and an individual’s lawful right, despite the belief that it would cause an escalation in violent crime.
Guns should be banned from all college campuses nationwide. Many students, teachers, and college presidents strongly oppose hidden, loaded guns on campuses because it will lead to increased violence, accidental shootings, and the non-carrying public would feel unsafe around the carrying public. If all elementary to high schools have a strict ban on guns for their campuses, it seems logical to extend the ban up to higher education. Now that it is more common for students in high school to take dual classes on a college campus, extending would ensure safety of the minors. Guns have a purpose at other arenas, but on a campus that is intended for learning and education it would be best to keep
College shootings are becoming more and more common and inevitable. Being able to carry guns on campus is being questioned for safety purposes, but there is much more to it. Guns should not be allowed on campus because even though they’re supposed to keep you safe, they can be dangerous, there is no prior training on how the weapon is to be handled, and furthermore the use of a gun on campus can pressure individuals to submit under peer pressure.
College campuses are more dangerous than ever because of the past decade; guns have not only been manufactured in excess, but availability and ease of accessibility. According to James Cool (2008), a supporter of guns on campus, reasoned why the increase of weapons occurred recently; “Our nation was founded … during the same time that modern firearms were invented and became readily available due to the Industr...
There's a problem in America. Children, defenseless are being shot one by one. They go to their school and the schools are a gun free zone. The shooters take advantage of it and take the children's lives. Teachers should be able to carry a handgun to protect their children. This is very important, to all teachers and students for their safety. Shooters wouldn't come in the school knowing that the teacher had a gun. Students would feel way safer. There would be a lot of safety that would go into this.there are a lot of facts that can help us make the decision.
When someone has a license to carry a concealed firearm, it does not mean that they should be able to carry wherever they would like. No one person is responsible enough for that privilege. In a high stress situation of an active shooter scene, even a highly trained person can make a bad assessment of the situation. Someone that just bought their first firearm or just got their license to carry, can make the situation worse. Firearms should not be allowed on any school campus because they are dangerous, can lead to more gun violence, and more innocent deaths due to inexperience.
Due to the recent disruption of violent crimes on campus, many citizens that are pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on school campuses. Those who are with guns allowed on school campuses claim that their rights have been violated for the reason that many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on their property. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns with them. It is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus or any University. There are already too many guns available to the public or easy to get any kind of gun, and allowing them on
In the past years, several schools and college campuses have suffered many shooting attacks, killing innocent people who just want to become professional and finish their careers. Those shooters have been caused by other students that might have personal or mental problems that make them think that they can solve their problems by shooting and killing people. This is why many people are arguing about the second amendment, if guns should be allowed on college campuses. Some arguments are: students are going to be more secure and they will be able to defend themselves in case that someone starts shooting. However, there is also a large amount of people who believe that if guns are allowed on college campuses there would be an increase of
For Example, if you are being robbed while walking at night on your very own campus you could use the firearm for you own means of protection. I have been on a total of ten college campuses all who have stated that they have campus security, escorts, and many other facilities and programs such as Crisis Hotline and self-defense classes that ensures the safety of students, so why should we put in the matters of the very weapon that is destroying this society every day. All in all, I believe that college students should not be allowed to carry firearms on campus because it can increase the issues that we have with the carrying of firearms in society today. If we cannot resolve the issue of gun laws in the United States right now; why add more issues onto the plate by allowing college students to carry guns on
“Since 2013, there have been over 200 school shootings in America, an average of nearly one a week”(Everytown Research). How safe is our family members at school? Allowing teachers and staff to carry guns could lower that number. Some people may disagree with it, saying that it would be teaching students violence. School shootings would be a thing of the past if staff were armed.
Guns on campus is a bad idea, we have student who have anger issues, most aren't even close enough to be mature, and it would make a scenario worse. Students always have a reason to get mad at any little thing from a simple argument with a classmate and to a bad grade on a test. So what if they had a gun at those exact moments. For one instance professors in Austin started to get scared about the new gun law that allowed students to conceal. Some professors actually resigned, and moved to other colleges.
