Should the legal driving age be raised to 18?
Did you know that more than half of driving accidents occur between ages 16 to 17 year old drivers? Most teens who get their driver's licence are overwhelmed with the fact that they are able to drive now. Teens will go and drive and they will be stupid and not pay attention to the road. If we raise the legal driving age to at least 18 we can stop some of these accidents.

The author of, “The dangers of texting while driving” states that, “Forty percent of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger.” A huge portion of teens drive around and text putting their lives and lives of others in danger. The author also states that, “Eleven percent of drivers aged 18 to 20 who were involved in an automobile accident and survived admitted they were sending or receiving texts when they crashed.” Texting can be a danger and most teens do it especially while driving. As a final point the author points out that, “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2012 driver distraction was the cause of 18 percent of all fatal crashes – with 3,328 people killed – and crashes resulting in an injury – with 421,000 people wounded.” As a leading cause of car wrecks texts are a danger especially to teen …show more content…
As Maria Wojtczak author of, “Why We Should Lower the Minimum Age For Getting a Permit” says, “By delaying the start of training we are most likely reducing the amount of time that a teen gets to practice under the watchful eye of a responsible adult.” As this is somewhat true, A teen should get all the knowledge from their guardians within the one year time period before they turn sixteen. On the other hand some kids have trouble paying attention or learning disabilities. Sixteen year-olds have a legitimate argument for keeping the age where it stands, but statistics show that sixteen year olds are not responsible enough to drive, and that more practice is needed before anyone should get a driver’s license. Driving is something people do everyday. Although many people do it well, some do not, that being said the legal age to drive should be raised to twenty one years of age. If we were to raise the driving age it would most likely be changed to 18. The best reasons for raising it to 18 would probably be that they are more responsible. “Children are not equipped to handle these vehicles, which are hard for even an experienced, adult driver to handle.” (Ron Shaffer) They have More money because of there jobs and if you go away from home you need a license.
The driving age should not be raised to 18 years old because teenagers have responsibilities to be go to certain places, if teenagers learn to drive early on in life they will be more comfortable driving and cautious when they get older, and an opposing view point is that teenager’s reflexes are not fully developed or equipped to safely handle an accident. II. Teenagers have responsibilities to be go to certain places. A. Teenagers normally have responsibilities to go to places like sport practices, band meetings or even school meetings. B. Teenagers should be able to drive themselves so they do not miss their activity because they have no one to take them.
There is a twice as much chance for a sixteen-year-old to die in a car accident than a thirty-year-old. Today there are many issues over texting while driving which is a distraction to the driver which is a cause of an accident. A vehicle, if not driven carefully, can become a weapon for both the driver and those around it.
More than 5,000 teenagers die while driving each year in the United States (Gregory). In my opinion this is due to three different, yet equally important factors. The first factor is that the teenage mind is yet to be fully developed, causing them to make irresponsible and sometimes reckless decisions. The second factor is that the experience of driving has evolved since the original driving age was established in the early 20th century. The third and final aspect to take into consideration would be that driving is the lowest minimum age of any adult restricted activity in the United States. Although, it can be one of the more harmful, not only to the perspective driver but his or her surroundings as well. Taking all three of these factors into account I believe the minimum driving age should be raised to 18 to decrease the accident rate amongst teenagers.
In the 1990's teens would get full licensing and all privileges with little or no testing at all. It wasn’t until 1995 when around twenty states required a learning permit, but the system was still very weak, as teens only had to keep their permit for two to three weeks. But somehow, teen drivers are not as dangerous as they are today. Experts say it is mostly because of deadly distractions in and out of the vehicle (Boulard 38). In 2003, teenagers topped the charts with ten teenagers dying each day in a motor vehicle; that's over thirty-six hundred kids dying because of weak, bendy laws that are meant to protect them....
Texting while driving is a widespread epidemic in the United States that has unfavorable effects on our society.“Driving while texting is the standard wording used for traffic violations” (Bernstein). It causes many people to be distracted which can lead to accidents. “Eighty-nine percent of people own a cell phone” (Gardner). That is a plethora of people that are at risk of texting while driving. Also, texting has increased by ten times in three years(Bernstein). “The risk of a crash for those who are texting is twenty-three point two times greater than those who are not” (Gardner).Driving drunk only makes a person seven times more likely to be in a crash (Bernstein). This means texting while driving is three times more dangerous than driving intoxicated. One in five drivers admits to texting while driving(Gardner). This shows that that texting while driving is a widespread epidemic. When a survey asked teenagers whether they text and drive,“seventy five percent of teens admitted to texting while driving” (7).Distracted driving causes seventy-eight percent of car crashes(Bernstein). “No distraction causes as high of a risk of an accident as texting while driving” (Gardner). Also with these statistics, it is not hard to understand why accidents in teenagers that are driving have risen. The Bluetooth capability in cars gives a driver a hands-free way to talk on the phone, but is still not completely safe (8). Also, only 1 out of 3 US cars sold in 2009 had this feature. New systems are being developed that will use Bluetooth as well a global positioning technology to allow parents to monitor cell phone use and texting while driving (10).
Engines roaring and cars flying down the highway recklessly, racing to the finish. This is a stereotyped outlook on teen drivers. This however, is not the case. Teens don’t drive to race down the road. They drive for freedom. They drive to get where they need to be on their own. The driving age should not be raised to 18 because it takes away their feeling of freedom, Denies the access to needed transportation, denies experience, It puts additional stress on parents, and they need to be learning the driving skill while they’re young.
Should the driving age be lowered to 14 years of age? Yes, it should! I think there are many reasons why it should be lowered. Some articles say that in some of the states all over America, many teens have the opportunity to get their "full" license at age 16. In the state of South Dakota, you are permitted to get your drivers license at 14.
Many people think about wanting to change the driving age. Doing this would not be a good idea because lowering it would put irresponsible people behind the wheel of a dangerous vehicle. Driving is one of the most dangerous things that most people don’t even think about, but they do it every day. In many senses the driving age should get higher. Teenagers who cannot drive rely heavily on parents, siblings, and other people to chauffeur them around.
