Should the legal driving age be raised to 18?

Did you know that more than half of driving accidents occur between ages 16 to 17 year old drivers? Most teens who get their driver's licence are overwhelmed with the fact that they are able to drive now. Teens will go and drive and they will be stupid and not pay attention to the road. If we raise the legal driving age to at least 18 we can stop some of these accidents.

The author of, “The dangers of texting while driving” states that, “Forty percent of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger.” A huge portion of teens drive around and text putting their lives and lives of others in danger. The author also states that, “Eleven percent of drivers aged 18 to 20 who were involved in an automobile accident and survived admitted they were sending or receiving texts when they crashed.” Texting can be a danger and most teens do it especially while driving. As a final point the author points out that, “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2012 driver distraction was the cause of 18 percent of all fatal crashes – with 3,328 people killed – and crashes resulting in an injury – with 421,000 people wounded.” As a leading cause of car wrecks texts are a danger especially to teen …show more content…

As Maria Wojtczak author of, “Why We Should Lower the Minimum Age For Getting a Permit” says, “By delaying the start of training we are most likely reducing the amount of time that a teen gets to practice under the watchful eye of a responsible adult.” As this is somewhat true, A teen should get all the knowledge from their guardians within the one year time period before they turn sixteen. On the other hand some kids have trouble paying attention or learning disabilities. Maria also says, “I agree that there are some teens that lack the desired level of maturity at 15, the same unfortunately is also true for some adults over the age of 35.” Some adults are just naturally irresponsible, but kids under the age of 14 are even less irresponsible as i mentioned before kids brains aren't fully developed yet. Maria also tells us, “ Parents need to understand the consequences of delaying the initiation of their child into the world of motor vehicle operation.
