Should Graffiti Be Considered Art?
On average 30 million dollars are spent in a year to clean graffiti. No “form of art” is worth spending millions to get rid of. Graffiti is drawings made from scribing or painting in a public place. To many people graffiti is a sign of mismanagement. When a city suffers from graffiti problems people see it as a common thing and tend to follow in others wrong footsteps. Graffiti is a problem because it makes a area look bad or impaired. This makes people want it gone, which is very expensive. It is vandalism and damages property. Although it is illegal people choose to do it anyways. Art is for people to see and enjoy. It is not something that is against the law and a burden to communities around the world. Those who choose to break the law will face jail time, fines, or both. Heather Mac Donald from NY times says “Graffiti is something one celebrates, if one is juvenile enough to do so, if it shows up on someone else’s property but never one’s own.” What Mac Donald is saying is that graffiti is something one may not care about or even maybe commend if it is not done on his/her own property, but if it was done on his or her property he/she would no longer feel the same way. This is important because many graffiti drawers most likely do not see this concept and decide to vandalize anyways. Graffiti is a major problem because it has become so common that young people grow up living around it and tend to feel that it isn't that bad. It influences kids to make more and more, like a chain reaction. Some people make graffiti to express themselves, get a point across, or to just contribute to the already existing graffiti but it is still against the law. “The mere presence of graffiti doubles the number of people littering and stealing in a neighborhood, new research suggests.”(Bryner). If only the graffiti that is inspirational was part of our societies then there would not be a problem because most of graffiti is tagging. Tagging is not something people want to see around cities.
