Though it hadn’t been officially established until the 18th century, public record has recorded hangings dated all the way back to 10th Century A.D.. Death sentences have been carried out by a wide variety of means, a result of a broad selection of crimes. Today in the U.S., capital punishment is legal in 31 states and illegal in 19.
