How many more fatal shark attacks will it take for someone in authority to acknowledge the damages, economically and socially, caused to human beings by sharks? We must legalise the culling of sharks. Sharks do not only brutally attack us humans but they also kill us. Culling sharks may not be the most pleasing way to find a solution but it is the most effective, quickest and easiest method. Scientists have argued that culling sharks will bring the ecosystem crashing down but this in fact is not true. We will need to give an end to these shark species that have and are still being the reasons for deaths of human beings. In 2016, there has been up to 26 shark attacks with two of them being fatal. Shark nets, shark spotting, apps, traditional and smart drum-lines, sonar technology, tagging, shark barriers, personal repellents, coloured surfboards, shark deterring wetsuits etc. The government has tried many systems to prevent shark attacks rather than shark culling but none of them have worked. I could one by one talk about why each of these methods have not worked but let's just stick to one. Shark nets. You may be asking yourself, what are shark nets or what do they do? Well, they capture sharks that come too close to shore grounds, then the nets release them back away from the shore. Smart idea right? No. It's time we acknowledge that shark nets don't work and instead do harm to other harmless marine species. The latest report on the NSW Shark Netting Program revealed 133 targeted sharks were caught with the nets along with 615 non-targeted marine animals. Almost half of the non-targeted marine animals were found perished. We need to come to the realisation that shark culling is the most effective

In my opinion, I think that the main reason there is shark attacks because of crowded beaches. I think that because there is so many people in the water that you can’t sea your surroundings.
Fishery Scientist are constantly working on ways to protect shark species and reduce shark bite incidences. Others have proposed that sonar waves are placed on nets to try and keep sharks away. Researchers are also collecting data from the sharks that are caught by the fishermen to be in a position to better understand sharks, and how we can live in unity with them. A shark tagging programme to try to better understand shark movements and patterns could also assist instead of culling. Statistics show us that there have been drastic reductions in fatal shark bites since nets have been installed in NSW and Qld.

People should focus on the BIG problems and worry less about the smaller problems that wouldn't affect everyone. If swimmers and surfers would take a chance and risk their lives in the sharks homes then it's their decision, we shouldn't have to worry about that. Each and everyone of us has a brain, which is used for thinking and creating new ideas. If everyone speak out then the world would hear our ideas to solve the problem. It doesn't matter how stupid your ideas may sound or if you're not a celebrity. Everyone has a voice! If everyone tries to stop the culling of sharks then the law will one day be abolished. We can set an example for other countries to follow! Let's show them what we can do!
I am sure almost all of you have either been to or heard of SeaWorld. Today I am going to tell you about what they do to their orcas that they are trying to hide. I chose this topic after watching a documentary called “Blackfish” that goes into the behind the scenes of how SeaWorld treats its animals. As they are at the top of the food chain, sharks play a very important role in the oceans in a way that an average fish does not. Sharks keep populations of other fish healthy and in proper proportion for their ecosystem. By preying on the old, sick or slower fish in a population, they prevent the spread of disease and prevent outbreaks that could be devastating. Tilikum, the 12,000 pound orca who measures in at a whopping 22 feet in length, jumps into the air on command and splashes the crowd who has paid a hefty price to sit and enjoy the show. It was certainly not the first show Tilikum and his trainer, Dawn Brancheau, had done together. To the crowd’s horror though, it would be the last. While going through the routine during their show on February 24, 2010, something seemed to be wrong. Mid-act Tilikum grabbed Dawn’s arm and ponytail and pulled her underneath the water. The bull shark may be responsible for many shark attacks in the world but I believe that we have no right to kill them. Sharks are very important to animals food cycles and if the food cycles get messed up it can greatly effect the world. In fact, the bull shark is more vulnerable to human impact due to their ability to live in fresh and salt water but many sharks that are killed are for either shark fin soup or their liver oil. The sharks liver oil has many uses now but it started as a machine lubricant. Another way that sharks die is by recreational fishing. The sharks can get caught up in the fishermen's nets and eventually suffocate and die. When someone says the word Shamu many of us think of a happy, active, go lucky orca whale. What if I told you that the orca whales at sea world are really lost, heartbroken, and most of them are unhealthy? Would you then stop supporting them?
Spreading the word is the main way to help the reef as only 1 in 10 people know about the coral bleaching and its damaging effects it has on the great barrier reef, the other 9 don’t even know whats going on with the great barrier reef let alone what coral bleaching actually is.
Even though humans get injured and occasionally killed by sharks, this is much more uncommon than many people think. In the video, "Great White Predator," it states, "[Sharks] mainly eat one thing: seals," (“National Geographic”). Shark attacks are much less likely to occur than people may think. In fact, Peter Benchley says, "Around the world many, many more people die every year from bee stings, snakebites, falling off ladders, or drowning in bathtubs than from shark attack[s]," (“Great White Sharks”). People have a greater chance of dying while doing everyday chores than from sharks.
Under those circumstances, it is only appropriate to preserve the lives of Sharks and acknowledge their importance to the ecosystem, because without them, the aquatic world may collapse and affect the world on the surface likewise. With the ecosystem gone, the niche of the Sharks are gone too, which lead to depletion of the rest of the marine life. This will cause much economic stress and lead to failure. We must know killing sharks are wrong, and we must stop it.
In 2015 only 59 shark attacks have occurred around the world compared to the millions of sharks killed by humans every year. Due to these accidental shark attacks people tend to think that sharks, especially Great Whites are evil creatures with malice intentions when attacks do occur; but, on the contrary that is wrong. Sharks are not the only beautiful and unique creatures in the ocean, they also play a vital role in our ecosystem; however, due to human interference they might not be around much longer, through awareness sharks can be protected from endangerment.

Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one.
