Throughout the semester, we have learned about an array of leadership approaches. We have leaders all around us. Whether at home, work, or school, there are leaders to learn from and to follow. There are also chances to become a leader as well. Two of the most important styles of leadership are adaptive and servant leadership. There are six key elements to being an adaptive leader. They are get on the balcony, identify the adaptive challenge, regulate distress, maintain disciplined attention, give the work back to the people, and protect leadership voices from below (Northouse, 2015). “Servant leadership begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first” (Northouse, 2015, p. 226). It starts with the individuals. It is vital that servant leaders help followers grow and succeed by emotionally healing. The academic advisors at Saunders provide a great example of impacting individuals through servant leadership. My advisor is always there for me. She sits and listens to my complaints, even if there is nothing that she can do to help. However, this is a huge help because it allows me to get move passed the things that are stressing me out. This relates to how leaders impact organizations as a whole. Creating value for the community means, “consciously and intentionally giving back to the community” (Northouse, 2015). There are a lot of leaders who have effectively given back to the community to better their organization. In fact, a lot of non-profit organizations have done exactly that to grow. One example that comes to mind is LeBron James. He is the founded of the LeBron James Family Foundation. They actively give back to the Akron, Ohio area through programs such as Wheel for Education, Akron I Promise Network, Boys and Girls Club, and Time to Promise (The LeBron James Family Foundation, 2015). They do things such as providing scholarships for impoverished children to go to college. Servant leadership is a designation coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 in an essay entitled The Servant as Leader. In this essay, he describes the servant leader and a servant first contrary to one who is a leader first. The difference is the servant chooses to put others needs before his own while the leader first may later become a servant from the promptings of a sense of right and wrong or simply because they are coerced in that direction (Greenleaf, 1991).
Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that augments the lives of individuals, builds better organizations, and creates a more just and caring world, they put the team first, and themselves second (MindTools, 2015). Servant leaders are able to demonstrate their traits through interaction with followers and other leaders within the organization. The characteristics of servant leaders include their commitment to the growth of people, stewardship, and building community, and provide leaders with the opportunity to experience change and to invite followers to change (Savage-Austin & Honeycutt 2011). Servant leadership encourages leaders and followers to ‘raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality’, and set their leadership focus: follower’s first, organizations second, their own needs last (Sendjaya, Sarros, & Santora, 2008). The servant leader focuses on the needs of others to include team members.
The Servant Leader discusses the importance of leaders who adopt a service oriented attitude in which they care for the needs of others before their own. A servant leader need not be an actual servant or have ever been a servant to become a servant leader. Rather, a servant leader is born with or adopts an “others first” disposition. Climbing through the ranks may help to create a servant leader, though it is not necessary. When leaders choose to see that the needs of their followers or their organizations are the highest priority they become servants.
A leader is made up of many qualities. Max Depree is the author of Leadership Jazz. In this novel Depree talks about leadership and how it is an art. Depree really goes in depth about leadership and gives many relevant examples. It showed me that there is a lot more to leadership then I originally thought. The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner (2007) is the result of twenty years of research on the factors that influence and create great leadership. Through studies and stories from leaders with various backgrounds throughout the world, the practices and characteristics that create great leadership are delineated. Leadership is viewed not as a group of inherent characteristics, but as learned behavior that anyone can achieve. The goal of Kouzes and Posner’s book is to inspire and educate leaders through transformational leadership. As such, leadership is about mobilizing others to become and do extraordinary things.

Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.

Becoming a successful leader throughout this journey has provided a progress of keeping an open mind in wanting to help the community, and organization to thrive in this changing world and identifying different strengths and blind spots at the same time. I have experienced many several touch points that have influenced my perspective on leadership and have more courage to become an overall person in adaptive leadership.
