Throughout the semester, we have learned about an array of leadership approaches. We have leaders all around us. Whether at home, work, or school, there are leaders to learn from and to follow. There are also chances to become a leader as well. Two of the most important styles of leadership are adaptive and servant leadership. There are six key elements to being an adaptive leader. They are get on the balcony, identify the adaptive challenge, regulate distress, maintain disciplined attention, give the work back to the people, and protect leadership voices from below (Northouse, 2015). “Servant leadership begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first” (Northouse, 2015, p. 226). It starts with the individuals. It is vital that servant leaders help followers grow and succeed by emotionally healing. The academic advisors at Saunders provide a great example of impacting individuals through servant leadership. My advisor is always there for me. She sits and listens to my complaints, even if there is nothing that she can do to help. However, this is a huge help because it allows me to get move passed the things that are stressing me out. This relates to how leaders impact organizations as a whole. Creating value for the community means, “consciously and intentionally giving back to the community” (Northouse, 2015). There are a lot of leaders who have effectively given back to the community to better their organization. In fact, a lot of non-profit organizations have done exactly that to grow. One example that comes to mind is LeBron James. He is the founded of the LeBron James Family Foundation. They actively give back to the Akron, Ohio area through programs such as Wheel for Education, Akron I Promise Network, Boys and Girls Club, and Time to Promise (The LeBron James Family Foundation, 2015). They do things such as providing scholarships for impoverished children to go to college.
