“The Dinner Party,” by Mona Gardner, is a short story about a banquet hosted by a colonial official and his wife in India. In this story, a young girl and a colonel conflict about how women do not have as much nerve control as men. While this argument is clashing, an American scientist notices a strange expression from the hostess. He realizes that there is a cobra in the room when the boy that the hostess summoned puts a bowl of milk outside. The American scientist quickly comes up with a strategy to warn others, but not to frighten them. Everyone listens to the scientist, and the cobra leaves the room.
