The goal of this program is to help all participants recognize their risk factors for heart disease, as well as promote awareness of the severity of heart disease, and its personal impact. More specifically, the goal for the nutrition education program is for at least 50% of participants to thoroughly learn the benefits of eating fish to increase heart health and incorporate fish into their diets at least twice a week to decrease risk of heart disease, in order to achieve and maintain lipid levels within normal limits. This curriculum is designed to be a three-month (April-June) program that meets once a week for two hours. Adults are recommended by their family, friends, and health care professionals to participate in this program to help improve their heart health. During the three months, the adults will be continuously learning about heart health, making healthier food choices, incorporating seafood into their diet, and participating in cooking demonstrations. In addition to the educational aspect of the program, the adults will also have group discussions to address social and emotional barriers as well as partake in recipe exchanges designed to be helpful for them or their families.
