On December 24, 2002, 27-year-old Laci Peterson, who was eight months pregnant at the time, was reported missing by her family. It all started when Scott Peterson returned to his home in Modesto, California, from his fishing trip he had taken to the Berkeley Marina and Laci was nowhere to be found. At this point, Scott didn’t question the whereabouts of his wife since she had stated that she was going to go grocery shopping and then she was going to take the dog for a walk. It wasn’t until later that night when Scott contacted Laci’s mother, Sharon Rocha, to determine if she was with them. That’s when Sharon declined the presence of her daughter, Laci, being with them and Scott concluded that Laci “was missing”. At that point, it was Laci’s parents who contacted the police to reported Laci was missing and an investigation started. [7]

Laci Peterson’s and the baby’s autopsy was conducted by medical examiner, Dr. Brian Peterson. It was reported that the body of Laci was discovered at a state of decomposition with the absence of her limbs (arms and legs), head and cervical vertebrae 1-6, thoracoabdominal viscera, and multiple rib fractures. It was also reported that the fetus, placenta and umbilical cord were missing and that the cervix was intact and closed. Meaning that the unborn baby was not delivered through the birth canal instead there was an opening near the top of the uterus suggesting that the unborn child may have been dissented from there. Making Dr. Peterson conclude that “The absence of body parts in this case may simply be attributable to postmortem change, animal feeding, and tidal action, there is no evidence of tool marks on remaining bones of the extremities or on the thoracic
