School counselors utilize career and personality assessments to help students identify their interests, skills and characteristics in order for them to make decisions regarding career and/or educational goals. Most school counselors make use of computer software assessments because they can quickly interpret the results and review the information with students and their parents. In order for students not to feel pressured, the school counselor should explain the assessments is not a test and it can’t be used for grade placement or as college entrance examination. “Counselors have an important obligation to assess career-related concerns and success as part (or central) to the counseling process.” (Hays, 2013, p. 203). We assess our lives on a daily basis when we make decisions or while solving problems. The same process we use making life decisions can be used when deciding a career path. “Psychological type is a theory of personality developed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung to explain the normal differences between healthy people. Based on his observation, Jung concluded the differences in behavior result from people’s inborn tendencies to use their minds in different ways.” (Myers, 1998, p. 6)When we are face with a dilemma or situation our according to Jung or mind will either be taking in information (perceiving) or organizing that information and drawing a conclusion (judging). As a school counselor begins working with students to find out what their interest are as well as their skills. One will need to know how the student focus their energy. For example according to the assessments, I’m extraverted, which means I direct my energy toward the outside world. I process information based on feelings, what I hear and can see. I imagine that’s the reason why I work in a human service field. I’m always welling to help my customer based on what I feel and hear from them. Some people are introverted, they internalize information based on their ideas and experiences. Career and personality assessments could be a great way to explore career choices that maybe appropriate for a student. When helping students with career decisions, it’s important for school counselors to remember they are helpers and students have to make their own decisions. Many times students will come to the school counselor seeking answers, it’s important for the school counselor to allow students to make their own decisions. We can help them by recommending they research different careers or volunteer in fields of interest to see what skills are needed and to gain clarification what is involved in the career their thinking about. Many times students lack understanding in regards to education and experience requirements in different fields, school counselors may need to provide students with resources. For example, school counselors can organize career fairs and or bring people from different fields to speak to groups of students who have an interest in particular fields. As a school counselor when using career assessments, one should remember assessments are only tools that should be used with other sources when helping students make
