As I expand my knowledge in the different counseling approaches, my values appropriately fit in with the humanistic theoretical orientation. The career theory Integrative Life Planning (ILP) also resonates in my future ambitions as a counselor. I am very interested in working with high school and/or college students and helping them successfully prepare for their future. The holistic approach has stood out to me from the start of the program and has been useful in my personal life. My goal is to help the student/client to be able to discover their own personal motivations and self-satisfaction within them, as well as a way to benefit society. My role as a counselor is to assist the student in organizing their personal skills, work values, and career interests as a start to finding an ideal work environment. With some guidance, this will empower the student to appreciate that they have options to do what they truly enjoy. I have known many students that do not have guidance in creating a successful future. Accord to the Gates Foundation study, only 7 of 10 U.S. students are graduating within the four years they are in high school (Corbett, G. A. & Huebner, T. A.. 2007). These students do not have reason to be motivated in discovering their ambitions. The quote that inspired me in my career journey is, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” by Confucius. As students, we do not always think about what the world needs. ILP and humanistic therapy allow the individual to become aware of their whole self. They are able to put their talents together in a successful and meaningful way. Students will be provided with handouts for future reference. Students will be reminded that there is only one session left. Session Ten: Evaluation. The last session will include reflecting on the past nine sessions and discussing what they have learned about themselves and how they can apply it to their future. Students will discuss thoughts and fears about the future and what has changed throughout this process. The importance of confidentiality will be stress again and students will complete a post-test, with the same statements from the pre-test to compare views. I would like to end the session with a mindfulness imagery exercise. This exercise will allow the student to get go of any stress they feel about life after high school. The students will be able to do this exercise on their own whenever stresses arise.
According to Maree and Beck, traditional career counseling involves a heavy emphasis on psychometric tests, work sheets and computer programs were utilized to form an objective image of the individual. Additionally, Humanistic Psychology studies how people value themselves. Today’s Psychologists are often faced with problems when diagnosing patients, and utilizing a Humanistic approach to their prognosis facilitates a more broad study of what may be occurring. Taking a step back, Jake is having a tough time with his classes; his classes are now more difficult than before, and they might be affecting how Jake perceives his own values. I.e. because Jake feels more nervous, he could be losing his sense of control, which goes against his personal growth and affects his values and image of himself. Applying the humanistic approach to Jake, his fulfillment as a student is his personal growth. However as the difficulty of his classes increase, so does his own personal perception on how much he is growing. For Jake, realizing that he’s not suited for a particular difficult class is upsetting and induces anxiety. Peter Tkach was enrolling for classes his last semester of his third year at Willamette University. He had done well throughout his educational career, matured through personal experiences, but he soon realized that his four years of college were coming to an end soon and that he needed to determine what he would be doing for the rest of his life, or at least post graduation. Peter decided to enroll in Dr. Houser’s Theories of Career Development in hope of discovering a career path that suited his formal education. Throughout the class he was exposed to Trait-Factor Theory, Personality Theory, Developmental Theory, and Social Learning Theory. He received great career lessons from The Adventures of Johnny Bunko, which he later applied into looking for an internship and career. Peter was able to use these theories and concepts to his own life through completing the assignments and by the end of the class, he was no longer lost in search of a career path, but had a career he wanted to pursue and got an internship for the following summer.

Person-Centered Therapy is an optimistic theory that is categorized in the humanistic approaches to therapy. PC therapy believes that human beings are intrinsically good, and are motivated to be the best that they can be (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p. 346). The theory embodies respect for individuals and values of tolerance and understanding (Brodley, 2007, p. 140). As the name implies the client is responsible for his or her own growth and improvement (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p.344). Rogers' stated that the main assumption of his approach is that “individuals have within themselves vast resources for self-understanding and for altering their self-concepts, basic attitudes, and self- directed behavior” (Rogers, 1980, p.115). One of the underlying assumptions, and main motivation, of Person-Centered Therapy is that human beings possess an innate tendency to grow and meet their full potential, or to self-actualize. Self-actualization is the inherent motivation to reach our highest potential, both emotionally and intellectually (Kosslyn & Rosenberg, 2004, p. 464). Self-actualization moves one towards autonomous behavior and self-sufficiency, it enriches one’s life and enhances their creativity. It also promotes congruence, wholeness, and integration of the person. Rogers describes self-actualizing people as the fully functioning person (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p.322).
Making a decision for the future can be hard, but it can be even harder when people are torn between their passions and meeting other’s expectations. In today’s generation, most students are expected to have their career chosen by the time they are out of High School. They are trained to plan and map out their entire lives. Yet, college students still end up having an undecided major by the time they start their freshman year in college. A huge issue that is present in today’s society is that college students chose their major for the wrong reasons. Parents pressure students to pursue careers in business, medicine, politics, and law; however, unless practiced with passion, those careers are pointless.
This course has highlighted many attributes and challenges within psychology and its many subfields. Within the weekly research of the psychological subfields I was able to learn the impact of education and its effect on the psychological profession. Along with the applied aspect of psychology listening to the online resource psychfiles, I have uncovered information that has solidified my goal of becoming an art therapist Masters degree. My focus will always be to provide mental health assistance to veterans as that is where my satisfaction and reward will fill in for the low entry-level salary.

With all the independence and freedom that recent high school graduates possess, they should carefully ponder the possible options that exist. Through abiding by the “check the destination before the ticket is purchased” adage, high school graduates can competently guide their personal journeys in college life or the real world. Regardless of the path chosen, college students and those who immediately enter the workforce will ultimately decide their future destinations. In addition, while graduates pursue their dreams, goals must be set and diligently fostered. The necessity of a college and/or career game plan is crucial, and should not be disregarded. Before Dr. King ended his “I Have a Dream” speech he declared, “Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.” Similarly, high school graduation is not a finish line, but a starting gun.

This psychology perspective emphasizes individuals ' inherent drive towards self-actualization, the process of realizing and expressing one 's own capabilities and creativity. It helps the client gain the belief that all people are inherently good. It adopts a holistic approach to human existence and pays special attention to such phenomena as creativity, free will, and positive human potential. It encourages viewing ourselves as a "whole person" greater than the sum of our parts and encourages self exploration rather than the study of behavior in other people. Humanistic psychology acknowledges spiritual aspiration as an integral part of the human psyche. It is linked to the emerging field of transpersonal psychology. As an undergrad student in her third year of school, I get asked a lot what I want to do with my future. And if I do not answer it with enough insight or evidence that I know what I am doing, then I feel like I look like a complete idiot to most. What I tell people is that I have a hunger for counseling; I want to be able to give people meaningful advice on their daily lives, their personal problems, and their personal thoughts. What is important to me is that I learn to be personable to everyone around me. I want to be expressively honest, yet a constructive influence on my clients, my friends, and my family’s life.
