Rhetorical Analysis of the American Century The editorial article “The American Century” is published in LIFE magazine 17 February 1941, and its author is Henry Robinson Luce. Henry Robinson Luce was called “the most influential private citizen in the America of his day” (Robert). He published effective magazines such as Time, Life and Fortune, which are very famous until today. This article was written during the World War Two, and it discussed many realistic problems about America like how America treated the war. Therefore, the author emphasize that America was in the war, and America has the advantages to win the war as well as creating American Century. It means the authors the moral ideas and attitudes that belong to a particular group or society to show it is a credible source. For instance, the sentence “The President of the United States has continually reached for more and more power, and he owes his continuation in office today largely to the coming of the war.” show that America was actually in the World War Two, even the president started to doing preparations. Therefore, More American people should pay attentions to the war because America is a powerful country that would do a great effect on the war. The author also gives a statement of the London Economist, “If any permanent closer association of Britain and the United States is achieved, an island people of less than 50 million cannot expect to be the senior partner.”, which means Britain people thought that they probably not be very close with each other at that time, and the regimes of Britain and America are not the same. Logos can be cited facts, statistics, historical analogies and other things to support author’s ideas. As an illustration, “With us it is different. We do not have to face any attack tomorrow or the next day. Yet we are faced with something almost as difficult. We are faced with great decisions.” The author uses the logo to show that America was different from Britain at that time, they did not to worry about the directly attack from other country. Consequently, it was significant for America to catch the chance to make correct decisions in a relative peace period. Specifically, for the sentence “We know how lucky we are compared to all the rest of mankind. At least two-thirds of us are just plain rich compared to all the rest of the human family - rich in food, rich in clothes, rich in entertainment and amusement, rich in leisure, rich.”, this logos show the excellent condition of American people: they live better than many people. As a result, making full use of this condition will be reasonable and beneficial for America.
