Alcatraz Mia Valle Alcatraz was once called one of the “Supermax Prison,” this was because it was a big place but not a lot of prisoners lived there.There was not a lot of inmates there that lived or served a lifetime, because it was for the people who were really dangerous. When all the deaths were happening there at Alcatraz people were starting to wonder about the safety there at Alcatraz. They also had to shut down Alcatraz, which wasn't open for a very long time and hasn't opened since but they do tours. But people say, “To this day the ghosts of the people who died there still remain haunting the place.” There was a huge amount of security there because of all the criminals, the three top ones were Roy Gardner, Al Capone, and Robert Stroud. Roy was known for being a bank robber, he stole $350,000 in cash. Al Capone was known for being the most famous gangster and for being a master manipulator. Robert was known for being the “Birdman of Alcatraz.” Because they were those top three and more dangerous people there, they needed better security guards so they don't escape and hurt others. Then Homer C. Cummings asked for the best of the best so he hired people from across the world, and said they can live in the apartments with their family if they agree to stay on the island, and help with keeping the inmates in. …show more content…

This was because of the 36 people that went missing or died. Two prisoners actually successfully made it off the island, but were quickly captured. Seven prisoners were shot and killed trying to escape. Two drowned and 5 prisoners have been unaccounted for presumed drowned. Not only, there was also either attempts, but they drowned or got shot. That's why people were deathly scared because those people will kill you for no reason really just for the heck of

    In the 1970s, prison was a dangerous place. Prison violence and the high numbers of disruptive inmates led prison authorities to seek new ways to control prisoners. At first, prison staff sought to minimize contact with prisoners by keeping them in their cells for a majority of the day. As time went on, the prison authorities began to brainstorm the idea of having entire prisons dedicated to using these kind of procedures to control the most violent and disruptive inmates. By 1984, many states began construction on super-maximum prisons. In California, two supermax facilities were built by the state: Corcoran State Prison in 1988, and then Pelican Bay in 1989. The federal government soon followed suit and in 1994, the “first federal supermax opened, in Florence, Colorado.” It was not much longer before supermax prisons could be seen all over the country (Abramsky). In Wisconsin’s supermax facility, with similar conditions being found in a majority of supermaxes, there are “100-cell housing units” that are in groups of 25 cells. These cells all face a secured central area. Technology plays a major role in keeping the facility to the highest security standards. Every cell’s doors are controlled remotely and the cells include “video surveillance, motion detection and exterior lighting” (Berge). With these technological securities, there are also procedural precautions. Inmates are kept in their cells for 23 hours a day until their sentences are done. This is said to be for prisoner and staff safety, although some feel otherwise. In 2001, 600 inmates at Pelican Bay went on a hunger strike, demanding reform. Those on hunger strike believed that the isolation and deprivation they faced was against their Eighth Amendment rights. ...

Built before the Civil War, it served two main purposes.
