On September 11, 2001, the United States experienced a tragedy that changed our country forever. Sixteen years ago, the world as we knew it was turned upside down. Thousands of innocent lives had been lost. Some burned to death. Some trapped in the heavy rubble. Some forced to jump. Picturing this would probably keep you awake at night, as it still does for many of us today. We will always remember this day for the rest of our lives. Although, today we have come to realize that this tragedy has united our country, making us stronger than we’ve ever been before. In a recent interview, I discussed this topic with my mother, Tina Everett. On this day my mother, who was 29 years old at the time, had been at work going about her business like any other day. Within only a short hour, though, the phone rang. It was her mother, calling to inform her of the tragedy she had heard on the news. My mother then said to me, “I couldn’t even believe it was actually happening. Fear, sadness, and eventually anger overwhelmed me.” She explained to me that not only her but everyone around her felt that way. After calling my father and other family members, my mother was released from work due to the horrific circumstances. Right away she went to daycare to pick up her precious child, which happened to be little Mason at the time. “I didn’t feel in danger myself, but I felt the need to be together with my family,” my mother explained. Later that day, the entire family made their way back home where they watched the live news broadcasts on TV. “I will never forget the people jumping from the building,” my mother sorrowfully muttered. Finally, my mother said, “This day made me realize life is too short. From that point on, I knew I needed to be spending more family time that I had been at the time.
