Recommended: Thoughts and feeling about narcotics anonymous experience

The meeting was held on Saturday at 6pm at the Welborne United Methodist Church, 920 Maybeaury Drive Richmond VA 23229 at Patterson Avenue, which is 5.1 miles away from my house. The meeting was titled “Living in the Solution.” I utilized the Metro Richmond Narcotics Anonymous website http://metrorichna.org/drupal/. I chose this meeting because it was near my home and the timing was convenient. I knew that I wanted to attend a meeting during the April 23rd weekend. When I realized that “Living Solutions” was in a neighborhood that I was familiar with, I felt more comfortable about attending. I also wanted to go to a meeting before the sunset, so at 4pm I decided to go the 6pm meeting.
I drove to the meeting and used my navigation system to assist me with the directions. Locating the meeting is one of the biggest challenges to attend a meeting along with anxiety or the inability to connect with others. This meeting was not on a public transportation route. First of all, I really enjoyed having her next to me because she was very nurturing and compassionate towards me. She briefly shared what she was going through a tough time, which included her boyfriend’s temporary stay in jail and her family conflicts. She spoke about how her family filed a restraining order on her two years ago. She optimistically spoke about her rekindling the relationship with her mother and one of her sisters. And sadly, spoke about continued estrangement from her other sister. She also spoke about the anxiety she felt from spending the weekend without her boyfriend, as she has not been away from her for a year. I can relate to the feeling of being away from the people you love and the inability to control the time apart.     The Alcoholics Anonymous meeting was an open discussion meeting. There were people from different backgrounds but everyone was respectful and friendly to one another. We started the meeting with a word of prayer. As a group, we held hands and recited the Lord’s Prayer. After the prayer the group recited a chant and swung their hands back-and-forth. After the prayer, we sat in a circle and the facilitator passed around an offering basket. Once offering was completed, I was asked by the facilitator to introduce myself. During my introduction, I politely stated my name, the name of my school, and major. The other attendees introduced themselves by stating “Hello, my name is John Doe and I am an alcoholic.” They then proceeded to share their personal experiences with alcoholism and express their gratitude for the 12-step meeting. While speaking, each attendee shared the moments in their lives that made them decided to seek treatment and how many years they have been sober. Each member of the group was very supportive of their group mates. They showered each other with love and gave advice for staying on track.

    I have never experienced what it would be like to be a part of an AA meeting. The only time I have had seen or heard someone mention meetings for alcoholics has been TV shows and movies, which would portray these meeting as a circle of strangers just deliberating stories of their life and how this disease has changed them forever. The room was nothing like I imagined. It wasn't an auditorium or a gym like they showed on TV. This place which I had imagined to be a dreadful enclosed surface with maniacal individuals turned out to be a small room with sofas and tables to make guests feel welcomed, with regular looking men and women appearing to be middle-aged. I thought "There has to be something wrong, I can’t be convinced that all these people who seem normal to me have an addiction problem with alcoholism". My friend and I took a seat by the door just in case we wanted to make a quick exit.

    My views on whether people are born good, evil, or neutral have not changed. I still believe that there is continuum that ranges from good to evil with neutral in the center. I think most people fall somewhere in the middle of this continuum though there may be some genetic traits that predispose them one way or the other slightly. For most people what causes us to fall into either the good or evil ranges are specific moments in time and the actions or behaviors we choose. Most people are neither fully good nor fully evil, but in a given situation can be either. However, I believe that good or evil actions can be reinforced for individuals, making the person more likely to act or behave in a similar manner again even if it is against the individual’s core beliefs about himself or herself.
