Reflection In Human Services

Taking the Human Services course has enhanced my understanding of what is required of me working as a human service provider and the most vital means of taking care of myself in a psychological manner, so that I wouldn’t experience the stress that I have encountered in the past. Although I experienced a stressful workforce, I stayed helping others until it had grown to the point where I reached my limit; in which I had to go out on disability in order to regain my mental stability. I am already familiar with the materials in the chapters that we have studied throughout this semester, because I have worked in the human services field as a substance abuse educator for the past eight years. When I was a substance abuse educator I sat down with my client and listened to them describe their problems and what caused them to engage in their addictive behavior. My first internship here is something new for me because I am interning on campus in the Older Adult Center (OAS), and the population of students that come in for assistance is …show more content…

In addition, to what are important values that will have a direct impact/ bearing on being able to work with clients includes: building a rapport, being able to work with a diverse population, talking to them about the importance of having value, knowing how to assists a client with their needs, keeping confidentiality (when it isn’t to harm them or someone else) and making ethical decisions to benefit the client. My job is to set aside my personal beliefs and values, respect the clients rights, not be judgmental and being able to work within their framework of value and what they are willing to
