This year I had the amazing opportunity to become a student intern working as a member of the Athletic Department. Working for the Red Raider club has been a unique chance to see how college athletics works from a different perspective. As a student intern for over a year and a half now, I have struggled, grown, and learned immensely this past year. I have had the great pleasure of working with many great minds who have constantly pushed me to become a better student, and an employee. The Red Raider Club has been an amazing place to start my career in Sport Management and I know that the experience I have gained here has set my career up for success. I believe that I contributed positively with my performance, and relationally around the office. This wasn’t the easiest thing I have ever done, but it did grow me in many areas. I know that by interning for the Red Raider Club, I got to see that I do not know everything and that I have a lot to learn. I have learned that being eager to learn new things and asking for help will greatly improve you as a professional. I have also experienced that working hard is essential, even in a non-physically laborious job. I had to learn a lot of new technology systems, and how to effectively communicate with my peers, and superiors. I would rate my job performance this semester as good, not great. I struggled with learning the new system, even though I worked hard to figure it out. I also made a few mistakes which seemed to annoy some people in the office. I have learned that having a thick skin helps with customer service because people call in and complain about certain things they didn’t like about the athletic department. I had a lot of people get frustrated with me because as a student, I cannot always answer their questions. One particular lady was upset that I transferred her call, and she let me know about some things she disliked, and had a few choice words. I no longer view work in this industry as unattainable and as daunting. I have seen that if you work hard and are willing to seek help and are humble you will succeed in this career. I aim to improve on many skills as I approach graduation and entering into my career field. I aim to improve on being more efficient with my time at work, making sure I am dressed professionally, arriving on time, even if I do not have set hours, and be willing to seek out others and ask for specific ways I can improve my job performance. This internship has influenced my career goals immensely. It is the first step in starting my career in the sport industry and it has shown me a lot about sales, fundraising, promoting, marketing, and putting on special events. Learning things in the classroom, such as fans want a unique experience while attending sporting events, and how your first position in the industry often starts with sales and learning how to sell, have really helped me with my internship because I got to see the things I have been learning in class be played out in person in my
