Racism is defined by merriam-webster.com as ‘1. A belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. 2. Racial prejudice or discrimination.’ Racism exists among all races and ethnicities, but most prominently between whites and blacks. The most basic cause of racism begins with the idea that there is something different between different ethnicities. Though that thought is illogical, it is one that seems inevitable. The amount of hatred one can hold against another because of the difference in their skin pigmentation is uncanny. There are an uncountable amount of sources on racism to be found just by merely looking on the internet. In The Bluest Eye, a novel written by Toni Morrison, alone one can find a series amount of racist comments and “ways of thinking”, but beyond that racism can be found in poems, films, and everyday life. Racism exists in many forms and is unavoidable. A major cause of biased racial dissertation is that is has been the way it is for so long. Caucasians do represent a disproportionate percent of wealthy and powerful businessmen and political leaders in American and their influence contributes to the racial stereotypes that are in existent today. When President Barack Obama first ran for his presidency in 2008 it is safe to say the world was shocked to say the least. President Obama’s race is a mix of Hawaiian and African American. In 2009 Michal Payne wrote an article in The Daily Item on President Obama’s election and Tim Wise’s novel, Between Barack and A Hard Place. In the article Payne disuses Wises two forms of racism; ‘Racism 1.0 is “old-fashioned racism” and Racism 2.0 is “enlightened exceptio... ... middle of paper ... ...m, or escape racism. Many want racism to end but are asking the wrong questions to make that happen. The question is not who is still racist or who is most discriminated against or even how to stop racism but rather what is the cause of racism. Is it because our forefathers all agreed that those with darker skin tones were inferior and society decided as a whole to continue with that ignorance or is it because society needs a “pick me up” every now and then and chose to fulfill that need that by putting others down or maybe it’s because for them, racists, the thought of having to admit that the way they treat others of different racists is erroneous and immoral, is too much to handle. Whatever the reason may be before anything can be done to end racism in its entirety one must find the base, the root, the simple yet convoluted cause of the idea of racism itself.
