There are many qualities and characteristics that comprise a great leader. The qualities can range from being honest, showing integrity, being devoted and having a sense of ownership (Kouzes & Posner, 2017). These are some qualities that earn credibility and make someone a credible leader. This essay will explore and explain what it means to be a credible leader, and the encounters I have had with leaders that have aspired me to be a role model in my personal and professional life. What is a Credible Leader Being a credible leader does not mean you are one thing or the other. To be a credible leader you must show several competencies and skills that contribute to the way others view you. In Kouzes and Posner (2003) there were multiple explanations and definitions of what a credible leader shows and how they act. Something that was made very clear was credible leaders empower others and raise their self esteem to give them a vision of what they can do (Kouzes and Poser, 2003). How credible a leader is will determine how much their coworkers will want to give their support, time, and energy into their work (Kouzes & Posner, 2003). As explained by Kouzes and Posner (2003) a non-credible leader is someone who lacks a sense of team spirit and involvement not only with their employees, but also with the organization. A leader that I have had encounters with that showed these characteristics was at my most recent job at a local clothing store. They were never present, and they never tried to get to know their employees. For example, I worked there for a year and a half and they didn’t know how to spell my name.
