The key purpose of project management is to used current software to predict as many risks and problems as possible; and then to plan task and assign resources so that the project is completed as ordered by the customer or client while keeping within the time frame given. Project managers must deal with the ever-present element of risk, both foreseen and unexpected, the use of project management means some of this risks can be identified in good time and so a solution can be created before the risk has a chance to happen. On large scale or very complex projects, a well skilled project manager will be able to use project management software to decide rather or not the overall aim of the project is even possible with the budget and resources given. There are currently many different software packages available for project management, some of which are free to use, some web based and some are licensed software packages. This will include Microsoft Project, Web2Project, 24SevenOffice, 2-plan, Cerbro and Endeavour Software Project Management. Any of these software packages in the hands of a project manager would be of great value as it can be used to provide priceless information. There are many different features that can be used in project management, one of the main of which would be the use of Gantt charts. A Gantt chart is used to display different stages of the project against the time scale given to complete the project. To create a Gantt, firstly the overall stages of the project are broken down into tasks, each task is labelled and time taken to complete the task is assigned, lasted any tasks that have dependences or on other tasks are linked together. The use of project planning is demanded skill on large skill project and so an experienced project manager may come at a must higher price. Failure to hire a skilled project manager could result in over spending to fix errors or even the projects overall failure.
