Professionalism My view on professionalism has changed due to the new impression that has been shaped by taking this class. Currently, I am seeing that professionalism is a job related construct that does not require any level of skills or knowledge to be able to display (Evetts, 2013). Professionalism is based on the behavior of the individual and their personal traits such as the way one speaks, the dressing character or the interpersonal relationship that an individual displays at the place of work. All these characters and traits are modifiable as the person can learn to behave in a manner that promotes professionalism at the workplace and be able to influence expected behavior over time (Evetts, 2013). The first behavior of maintaining professionalism is arriving early for work. Showing up late to work could lead to delays in the process of changes of shifts and could derail the lab’s program for the day. Arriving early for work would also encourage other workers to do the same (Launer, Gill & Griffin, 2014). Dressing appropriate for the workplace is professionalism. As a kinesiology student working in the lab, If I am dressed professionally clients will be more confident of the process of examination and portrays that I have the appearance of a focused and dedicated worker (Evetts, 2013). The indecent dressing has the potential to make the customers to distrust the caregiver. Proper language use in its context and grammar while avoiding the use of slang is another professional behavior that I envision to demonstrate. Use of appropriate language will encourage effective communication between myself and clients (Bourelle, 2014). Use of slang at the workplace can come off aggressive, indecent and abusive language which can annoy the client or turn away
