Pro School Uniforms
Each day school is a nightmare for you! Kids laugh at your clothing and your style. They may pick on you or even bully you. Your clothes are not cute or “in style,” and students judge you for that. This makes you feel dreadful and horrible because some families can’t afford expensive and fancy outfits. This is one, of the many, reasons why some schools are switching to school uniforms. As an example, 19% of schools have switched to uniforms in 2011-2012.(“School Uniforms”) Some argue that they take away freedom of expression, while others think that uniforms stop bullying and have many other beneficial effects. This makes school uniforms such a hot topic from schools to homes. I firmly believe that school uniforms are essential to schools because they expand school safety, put a plug on bullying, and substitute broken dress codes violations.

Uniforms create respect for all students which then creates unity. Unity also creates a belonging of to students. Which results in confidence boosts. The results of positive effects of uniforms are endless, this is probably why uniforms are known as the “great equalizer.” “It’s time to eliminate from schools the status and respect many students give to clothing labels and price tags,” according to (“Should Students have to Wear School Uniforms”). Having some sameness can create a safe environment in schools. Having school uniforms can help decrease in-school violence, theft rates and gang colors. School uniforms can also eliminate distraction that clothes can cause. According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. You need school uniforms to have a safe environment for people to teach and learn.
It is a great idea for schools to implement a policy on school uniforms because statistics show that students who wear uniforms make better grades. Additionally, male students are not distracted by what female students are (or aren't) wearing. Moreover, students feel a sense of fairness with one another as they are all wearing the same things. When students are at one with one another, their confidence soars, which leads to better academic performance. Student uniforms help reduce the amount of bullying, and students who would normally be bullied now have a much better disposition while at school.

Having a school uniform provides safety for the students attending the school. Bullying does not take place because all students are wearing the same clothing. On student cannot judge another student for not wearing trendy clothing. According to Mariam Wilde in the article “Do uniforms make schools better?” he states, “School uniforms can diminish economic and social barriers between students” (Wilde 1). A poor student with low income has the same position in school as a wealthy student. This example can also prevent peer pressure. No one has to buy trendy clothes they cannot afford. Brooklyn College Academy maintaining a school uniform can inhibit bullying from occurring. Another example of students being safe while wearing school uniforms is if in intruder entered the school. According to Lindsay Lowe from the article “School Uniforms on the Rise” she states, “With children wearing uniforms, campus security officers can easily identify anyone who doesn’t belong” (Lowe 1). If a complete stranger were to ever go onto a campus, staff members would be able to distinguish the intruder because everyone would be wearing the same thing. The intruder would be easier to spot among the crowd. Uniforms also create safety when a group of children go on field trip. It is easy for one student to get distracted and lose the group. However, when the teacher tries to find the student and speaks to the officials about the lost child, the student will be easy to identify because he or she will be wearing a school uniform. School uniforms reduce the stress children feel when trying to fit in with their peers. Without them, some children may be alienated because their economic background reflects the clothes they wear. Children tend to break off into “cliques” and uniforms could possibly help unite students. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through other outlets other than fashion can help children forge friendships based on their common interests.
A major reason that schools should have uniforms is because students will get along better. They wouldn’t compare each other based on whose wearing what. A while back, researchers studied that the reason certain school require students to wear school uniforms is because they feel that it will help stop other students from bulling one another, just because they don’t have on high priced shoes or clothing it shouldn 't stop them from doing what they do best. At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.

When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. Many people believe that school uniforms build the community into a safer, more positive environment. School uniforms improve school academics, prevent gang violence, and assist families, who can not afford expensive clothing.

All individuals struggle with discovering who they are and who they may want to be in the future. School environment, either negatively or positively, impacts the result of this greatly. Uniforms in the learning environment have become a highly debated subject all across the country. Although some individuals believe school uniforms have a positive affect, those people should understand the negatives because uniforms promote appearance over character, lower student’s self-esteem, and conflict with the right of expression.
