Animals are often described as loyal companions that provide unconditional love and that bring joy into our lives, but yet we allow them to be subjected to harm for research. I ask, how is this any different from animal cruelty? The government allows animals to be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated and starved. Each year, millions of innocent animals are killed during these painful tests. For many centuries, scientists have used animals of all kinds, such as rats, rabbits, primates, cats and dogs as a way to test the safety and effectiveness of a product before human exposure. Although animal testing brings more medical advancement, it is an expensive way of researching imprecise outputs and a practice of animal cruelty. One of the most common …show more content…

Advanced technologies have created a smarter and improved solution to testing the potential effects of substances that are as good as animal test and potentially more cost effective. Animals can contribute to high failure rates, because the animal models being used to develop drugs are not predictive of what can occur in the human body. Animal studies can be very expensive and time consuming, but with models that can better predict the human situation we can decrease the amount of side effects that come with new substances. In vitro models are cells or tissue samples taken from animals or humans and prepared for laboratory study on the effects of chemicals on the human skin. This procedure is capable of replicating the development of the human central nervous system and was found to be more accurate in identifying chemical skin irritants and less expensive than traditional animal test. Cell cultures give information about how a drug would be metabolized and eliminated from the body. In computer models scientist are able to simulate diseases and understand how different substances can impact the way in which a disease can be treated. With imaging techniques such as CT and MRI scans we are able to have a non-invasive view on the …show more content…

The amount the U.S. spends on animal testing is around $6,000 for skin sensitivity testing, whereas in vitro is as low as $3,000 for the same test. Another important note of animal testing is that the experiment itself may lead to an increase in spending to anywhere from hundreds to thousands due to equipment. Researchers need to purchase feed, bedding, fresh cages, new animals, or other additional equipment for animal experimentation. If we were able to conduct the same test at a lower cost, we would be able to put the remaining amount towards other different medical or technological advancements. As for time, Doke Sonali reported that an animal experiment can range anywhere from months to 5 years, while with cell cultures it only takes a couple of months to 2 years. Time is key when trying to look for new symptoms and medication because there is always someone who could have benefited from such
