“One out of every deaths in America is caused by an illness directly related to overweight and obesity” (Carmona). Over the years, the number of Americans has risen. This increase is a result of excess; it hasn’t been rising until Americans started making bigger meals and eating fast food.If one doesn’t make food for himself/herself, the individual doesn’t know exactly what is being put into his/her body. Food where they didn’t make their self, therefore they don’t know what they are eating. In today’s society faces an obesity epidemic; to remedy this issue America should consider creating a national weigh in. A national weigh in would be a requirement for all Americans to go to their medical clinic and be updated on their weight. Many would think it would cost more money towards the health care, but due to the availability of the Affordable Care Act this should not be an issue. No one should live an unhealthy life. Obesity is a factor that takes a huge toll on our country. Former general surgeon Richard Carmona wrote a report about how obesity isn't a small factor: In the year 2000, the total annual cost of obesity in the United States was $117 billion. While extra value meals may save us some change at the counter, they’re costing us billions of dollars in Health care & lost productivity. Physical inactivity & super-size meals are leading to a nation of oversized people. (Carmona 13) $117 Billion dollars is a overwhelming amount to spend on healthcare. That money could have been better spent making our country healthier and more economically advanced. From the book Obesity, author Evelyn Kelly said, “Poor nutrition and physical inactivity account for more than 300,000... ... middle of paper ... ...han 2 hours a day of regular TV viewing time has been linked to overweight and obesity” (“The Obesity Crisis…”). Americans chose to use the TV, phone, or computer during their free time, and their non leisurely time is just as inactive. Individuals like to get things done fast and easy, once they are done they like to rest and relax not move around so much. Carmona also said, “This crisis is obesity. It’s the fastest-growing cause of disease and death in America. And it’s completely preventable” (“The Obesity Crisis…”). Despite Americans' knowledge about obesity they choose to lead a life that supports obesity. Since obesity is a choice, a national weigh in would let the patient know that they are able to change their lifestyle if they chose to before they are affected. Being obese can lead to higher risk of death, people strive for immunity because they fear death.
