When we think of global warming, we think in the present. Not realizing this began centuries ago, which some scientist believe that earth has, ever so slowing, been warming up since the ice age. Still yet some claim the Industrial Age, of when coal, railroads and developing of lands, was responsible for the global warming. It was not until the 1970’s that global warming came into public awareness and even then it was not recognized as a serious issue. However, in 2004 global warming finally became a ’hot’ item, in September 2004 when it made the cover of National Geographic magazine, in May 2004 a smash hit movie, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, and in December 2004, a best selling novel by Michael Crichton, State of Fear. On January 15, 2004, Al Gore gave a speech about global warming and the environment. He outlined for us what the scientific community has been warning us about the future of our planet. He won a Academy Award in 2006 for his movie, “The Inconvenient Truth” a documentary on global warming and in 2007 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in climate change. He is also the founder of the Alliances for Climate Protection. Yet, there are some politicians who believe climate change is real, however human activity is not the cause. Climate has always changed throughout the years and will continue to do so, but we cannot change the climate. Until all politicians embrace that there is a global climate crisis, we cannot progress toward resolutions to reduce gas emissions into the atmosphere. It is a sad commentary, that our nations leaders have chosen to make climate change a political football. Most of the opposition stems from the Republican party and their refusal to accept that climate change is real and that mans activities are contributing to temperature rises and a shift in climate patterns. It is remarkable to note, that since 2005, our politicians affirmed that climate change was real and now that nearly a decade later, there is still no plan of action in place with a timeline for resolutions and adoption’s on how to bring about, to halt and reverse mans overuse of mainly fossil fuels. Al Gore wrote on June 25, 2013, an article titled, “The Best Presidential Address on Climate Change Ever”. Al Gore said it was a “historic speech”.
