To the Australian Government and whomever else this may concern,
I am writing to you in regards to addressing the serious problem of burning coal. Coal burning has become a serious problem all around the world, and it has a major effect on our global climate. Firstly, the process of burning coal gives off nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide, among other gases. Not only is coal burning the leading cause of acid rain, smog and toxic air pollution, but coal plants are the leading cause of global warming (Union of Concerned Scientists, n.d.).
Burning coal affects global warming by producing carbon dioxide and releasing it into the atmosphere, where it remains and traps heat. This is a huge issue relating to and affecting global warming because of how it traps the heat. The sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide that is given off from burning coal is left to hang and clutter in the air, leaving heat with no way of leaving the atmosphere. The fact that fossil fuels are currently the world’s primary energy source, and that a coal plant usually generates around 3.5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year2, is the reason why coal is the leading cause of global warming. The overall solution is renewable energy. Renewable energy is defined by the U.S. Department of Energy as, “energy derived from resources that are regenerative or for all practical purposes cannot be depleted”. (U.S Department of Energy, n.d.). Some examples of renewable energy are geothermal energy, solar energy and wind energy. However, at the moment, none of these are enough to take over the job of coal burning. This leaves us with only one solution: hydroelectric
