An American Automobile Association study found that nearly half of all teen respondents admitted to reading an incoming text message or email while driving a motor vehicle. In society, it has become apparent that teenagers are frequently engaged in behaviors that involve the use of their phones and social media. This epidemic has one very dangerous consequence which can result in serious accidents that can result in death. Alone in 2014, there was 3,179 people killed and 431,000 people injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. 11 percent of all traffic fatalities involving teens ages fifteen to nineteen resulted from distracted driving. In order to solve this problem devices must stop working once they are traveling over 5(MPH) miles per hour( MPH). In the past 10 years, there has been an increase in the concept of hands free driving technology. However, many individuals are not aware of the potential dangers of hands free and voice control features. Recently in a National Safety Council survey they found that "80% respondents said they believe hands-free devices are safer than handheld and 53% said they believe voice control features are safe because they are provided in vehicle" ("Technologies" ).This statistic is able to revel a common misconception among members of society This proves that there needs to be more done in order to educate drivers of how hands free technology is actually very dangerous; this danger is referred to as "inattention blindness" and can lead to drivers missing items such as stop signs and pedestrians ("Tech to Prevent Distracted Driving").This shows that hands free technology is not the answer to solving this problem.
