“BREAKING NEWS, yet another driver dies from the distraction of texting while driving”. These stories are constantly on the news and seem to be inevitable. Car accidents are the leading cause of teen deaths in the United States combining with inexperience and distractions, such as texting while driving. No state bans all cell phone use for all drivers. Driving and the technology we have today are not a good combination, and there are phone applications and devices to prevent this conflict. “Over 16,000 people die each year and with the increase of technology in people’s daily lives this number is only going to increase”. More and more people die each day from the effect of texting while driving, it is time for the United States government to take a stronger stand and regulate more laws to reduce this number. Teens should be the last group of people to break this law. “Texting while driving makes crashes 23 times more likely”. As drivers become more experienced and older texting while driving increases. For example, “24 percent of 16 year olds said they text and drive, as opposed to the 58 percent of 18 year olds that don’t”. In general teens text much more than adults while driving. As a matter of fact, “82 percent of drivers between the ages of 16 to 24 have admitted to reading a text message while driving”. Not only are teens unexperienced but are trying to pull off the nearly impossible task while driving. Texting while driving is leading cause of death among teenagers passing the death rate of drinking and driving. Studies show that if this trend continues, more than 3,000 teenagers will die next year. Creating a law to ban texting while driving may be a treatment for the symptom but it fails to address the root cause of the problem. The root cause is that people fail to stop and take the risk associated with texting while driving and take this matter seriously. Each different state has their own respective laws regarding policy and punishment when it comes to texting while driving, all of which are not strong enough to force people to put their phones down. Every state should have the same exact laws against texting. Due to these facts, it is imperative that the United States’ government takes strong action against the rising war on texting and driving. Making it a requirement to download applications and ensuring that our country understands the horrific danger that can occur simply from typing “hey whats up”
