Technology has made it easier to connect with others wirelessly via cellular devices. This connection has made human beings dependent and even somewhat disconnected or distracted from reality. One of the largest issues faced around cell phones is when driving. Texting and driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents. Many drivers find multitasking difficult. Texting while driving is hazardous to one’s self, passengers, pedestrians and other drivers. At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010 (NOPUS,2011). As soon as a driver hears a notification, they are tempted to pick up their phone and respond. The second that their eyes look down, their attention is no longer on the road. Driving under the influence is illegal and the consequences are severe. Many believe that the same should apply for texting while driving. Larry Copeland states that after a study was conducted at The University of Utah, it showed that driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08% is equal to texting and driving (Copeland, 2010). The Brain Injury Society reported that in 2002, over two thousand people died as a result of distracted driving also known as texting and driving. In 2002, over 12 thousand died because of drunk driving. However, the number of fatalities due to intoxicated driving decreased by 25% in 2012 and the number of fatalities associated with texting and driving increased by 22% in 2011. Distracted driving is becoming an alarming safety risk for drivers and pedestrians on the road. If laws were the same for both hazards, then maybe there would not be an increase in fatalities due to texting and
