I am a health promotion major with a specialization in community health and wellness and my dream job is to become a founder of a local non-profit organization that focuses on bringing affordable fitness and nutrition classes to low-income families. I have become really interested in this field, because both my mom and younger sister are considered obese. My mom was diagnosed with high blood pressure, arthritis, and sleep apnea as a result of her weight. Her life is awfully limited due to her conditions, to the point that she can no longer walk moderate distances due to her knees hurting from the arthritis pain. This is an argument discussing the most important health promotion issue in Newham, borough of London, about the obesity. This borough (New ham) has massive issue about healthy food promotion, where there is too many fast food shop and restaurants all around schools. Many children in the area of Newham are obese according to the new report on 29 November 2015 published Newham Recorder news. The report identified that nearly half of year sex children in Newham city are overweight.
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..
The best way to begin a revolution in health in America is to start with the youth. The United States has the largest percentile of overweight children in the world. Approximately one-quarter of all four to five year olds and one-third of ten to eleven year olds are considered overweight. The obese children will more than likely become overweight parents. A child with an obese parent is ten percent more likely to raise obese children and thus the cycle continues (McBride, 2010). The more years that go on the higher the obesity rate climbs because the children are eating more and more and becoming less and less active.
Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions, with the largest subpopulation being African American girls. According to the American Public Health Association (APHA), nearly 22 percent of African American girls ages 6-11 years of age are overweight. Childhood obesity is a considerable predictor of obesity in adulthood and can lead to deleterious consequences if left untreated. Improving the health needs of these vulnerable populations needs to be paramount not only for the overall wellbeing of the individual, but to avoid placing additional burden on the health care system. Health promotions such as educational programs focusing on health risk or behaviors are successful in improving health behaviors (Bellows, McMenamin, & Halpin, 2010).
Childhood obesity still considered to be an endemic problem and affecting the entire nation. Many programs are already established to help solving this matter. Among established programs is the kids’ night out at the Livonia recreation center, Michigan. Four nursing students continue planning to apply Rosswurm & Larrabee model of change .This model of change will be used by the change agents as a framework to help design the change project, Smart Choices Healthy Kids. 16.1 percent of children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 years were considered obese in 2005-08 (NHANES, 2014). The target goal is 14.5 %, this would be a 10% improvement from the current goal. At the end of the teaching project the parents of the audience would be able to identify the healthy target weight for their children. 20.8 percent of physician office visits by adult patients with a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia included counseling or education related to diet or nutrition in 2007 (NAMCS, 2014). The target goal would be to improve the target percentage to 22.9 percent. At the conclusion of my presentation the audience would be able to verbalize what the healthy body mass index is. The last objective for my project would be to increase the proportion of persons with medical insurance in 2014 by 10 percent (NHIS, 2014). This would be evidenced by at the end of my teaching project the audience will be able to verbalize how they apply for insurance. By teaching the audience these objectives nurses provide people with health information so they can improve their decision making abilities and therefore decide if they want to change their behavior. While teaching the audience it must be identified of how people learn, since not everyone learns the same way. “Learners accept information based on many factors including what they know, what they believe, the culture in which they have been raised as well as how well they can understand and relate to the information they receive (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).” According to the CDC, some strategies and solutions for my community to help decrease obesity in adults and children include information on resources such as the “Let’s Move! Studies have shown that from 1960-2010, the quantity of Obesity in America has doubled within those years. Obesity is one of the many health issues that America pays little attention to but should be evaluated and thoroughly dealt with. Heart Disease, Diabetes, Obesity, and Depression are some of the other main health problems that have been on the rise on Americans. While there are many Health issues that people are more knowledge about, they usually learn when they or someone in their family has the experience of that health problem. A way to help prevent and/or have others become even more knowledgeable is by creating a program in which Middle/High School students learn about the types of Health issues.
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
The health promotion theory, proposed by Nola J Pender, was designed to assist nurses in helping their patients identify health risk factors and beneficial practices that help the patients actively determine which behaviors will result in achieving optimum health. The models “framework serves as a guide for investigating the complex biopsychosocial process that motivate individuals to engage in health behaviors that are directed towards enhancement of health (Eftekhar et al., 2011, p. 142). It defines health as a positive dynamic state rather than simply the absence of disease. The theory is directed at increasing behaviors an individual can perform to bring greater longevity and a high quality of life while enhancing the patient's level of well-being.
What makes a person healthy? Surely, it is more than exercising and a proper diet. As a ten year-old girl, being healthy had one meaning to me; to eat all my vegetables and to be physically fit. I have chosen healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness.
Public Health Nursing (PHN) aims to improve the wellbeing of the population by promoting health and preventing disease among all people in the communities (Public Health Nursing, 2013). The PHN utilizes the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention to help improve the health of the communities. The PHN process is applied to all levels of practice. Interventions are “actions take on behalf of individuals, families, systems, and communities to improve or protect health status” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 191). This paper will identify PHN interventions such as screening, outreach, and referral and follow-up, health teaching, and counseling that was identified in the PHN in the 21st Century project that this author completed as part of the PHN experience.
