I went to Northview Elementary from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Kindergarten and First grade are the only two years that seem to stick out for me. I remember being at recess in Kindergarten with a couple of friends I made. The teacher, Mrs. Francis blew her whistle signaling that recess was over, but me and my friends weren't ready to go back inside. We tried hiding on the playground, which was not a success. Mrs. Francis only warned us that what we did was wrong. Mrs. Francis was my favorite school teacher, I remember her teaching me how to spell pizza and I being so fascinated that there was a Z. In fifth grade, I had a teacher by the name of Mrs. Sera. Even typing her name gives me this cold feeling inside; she eerily resembles Miss Viola Swamp from the children’s book Miss Nelson is Missing. Viola Swamp was “the meanest substitute teacher in the whole world.” Mrs. Sera, on the other hand, my full-time educator and seemingly just as mean. She had a long pointy chin, a fairly large nose, and extremely thin lips that rarely ever smiled just like Miss Swamp. I would switch back and forth between loving school and despising it. Often times I would be bored by the school work that was too easily completed. This was changed by a once a week class that was named Individualized Learning Opportunities (ILO). This class gave me a reason to enjoy school. Along with finding my passion for theater, I also found one of my favorite teachers during my time in Junior High. His name was Mr. Rodrigue, and he was my homeroom and science teacher for both seventh and eighth grade. He was one of the first teachers that was every real with me. He was a very open and honest teacher who treated his students like adults. Mr. Rodrigue had this wit and sense of humor that made him more personable than any of my other teachers. I loved how he gave everyone in our homeroom nicknames, for instance, mine was “Higgy-Baby”. To this day I do not know how he came up with a name like that, but I know that while I was in his classroom, I was never called just Alyssa. While I learned many new and interesting things in his science class, I remember more of the life lessons that he taught during homeroom. Her name was Mrs. Ladd. She taught math at the junior high school. Mrs. Ladd was not the most popular, funniest, hardest, easiest, nicest, nor the meanest teacher. I remember her for some other reasons. When I think of Mrs. Ladd, I think about how hard she made me work.
The teachers of the school were very supportive, I loved them all. Being at school is very good in terms of dealing with different people. We were exposed very early to this world; where there are different attitudes and beliefs. I think having teachers with totally different minds has a role in our social intelligence development. I learned how to deal with people even if their beliefs, thoughts and styles do not meet mine.
